Texas Rangers call up first baseman prospect Curtis Terry

The organization’s hottest-hitting prospect this season is expected to join the team in Houston this weekend.

Big Curtis Terry is apparently headed to the Big Leagues.

With the Rangers in the throes of a nine-game losing streak, Terry, the organization’s hottest-hitting prospect this season is expected to join the team in Houston this weekend. Terry, 24, doubled in his first at-bat Thursday night for Triple-A Round Rock at Reno. He was removed from the game afterwards. The removal was neither injury- nor discipline-related.

Terry, a 13th round pick in 2015, had entered the day hitting .291 with 17 home runs and a .950 OPS. He was the club’s Tom Grieve Minor League Player of the Year in 2019 after hitting 25 homers in a season split between Class A Hickory and Down East. He was added to the club’s alternate site last year. And his performance since the start of this season has pushed the Rangers.

President of Baseball Operations Jon Daniels said on Wednesday that players like Terry were being actively discussed for promotions as the club’s performance continues to lag.

“Guys who have really earned looks and are kind of knocking the door down from the system lead to an active conversation,” Daniels said when asked, using Terry as the example. “We do want to reward those guys and we will be looking to do so in the course of potentially the next few days and the end of the month. There are some players at Round Rock that are deserving of an opportunity to come up here and compete.”

Daniels on Thursday, however, did not confirm or deny a pending move for Terry.

The Rangers, however, won’t be able to activate Terry without a corresponding move. He is not currently on the 40-man roster, so a spot will have to be created for him. The Rangers could designate a player for assignment, trade a player or move a player on the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.
