The American Motors Corporation announced a series of executive changes yesterday, including the unexpected election of a new chairman, Pierre Semerena, who is a former vice president of Renault, the French auto maker that owns 46 percent of A.M.C.

Mr. Semerena fills a vacancy created when W. Paul Tippett resigned last April to become president of Springs Industries, a textile company. Mr. Tippett remains a director of A.M.C.

The directors, who met in

New York yesterday, also elected Jose J. Dedeurwaerder as chairman of the executive committee, replacing Mr. Tippett. Mr. Dedeurwaerder continues as president and chief executive officer. He was elected president and chief operating officer in January 1982 and has been chief executive since September 1984.

The board also voted to make

Joseph E. Cappy, executive vice president, the chief operating officer.
