Selena Gomez has cancelled the remainder of her world tour is taking a break from the spotlight due to anxiety, depression and panic attacks, she has revealed.

The Revival tour was planned to end in Guadalajara, Mexico in December this year, but in a statement released today it was confirmed the singer wouldn't be carrying on.

In a statement via People magazine the brunette revealed she would take time off to focus on her health and deal with the side effects of her Lupus diagnosis.

"As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," the 24-year-old said.

"I've discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges."

Selena continued: "I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.

"Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best.

"I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues."

It comes just a month after the singer claimed she felt "extremely unauthentic" and "unconnected" to her music in an Instagram post.

The 24-year-old US singer said she needed to "rethink some areas of my life" in the message after she performed to thousands of fans in Jakarta, Indonesia.

She wrote: "Tonight I felt extremely unauthentic, unconnected to both myself and my music.

"I've never really felt like my materials, wardrobe or a video could define me. I act on a moment and fear something that hasn't happened.

"I'm stagnant, I stay still and don't just sit with myself first and ask, 'Is this where I am, wholeheartedly?'

"I've always told the truth. I'm always true to my word, I've shown who I am but I need to rethink some areas of my life creatively and personally. Had to get that out."

Gomez, a former Disney child star who famously once dated Justin Bieber, posted the message a day after celebrating her 24th birthday.

In the picture caption, she added: "Not being negative about anything I've done. I'm grateful for every single moment I get here - Indonesia you were LOUD and clearly inspiring. Love you so much."

Gomez confirmed in October 2015 that she was receiving chemotherapy after being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease lupus.

In 2013 the singer sparked concern when she was forced to cancel a tour of Asia and Australia.

In January 2014 it was confirmed she had entered the Dawn at the Meadows rehab facility to seek treatment, though it was denied she was dealing with substance abuse issues.

Speaking to Billboard magazine about the difficult time, she said last year: "I wanted so badly to say: 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're a*******'."

"I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again."
