SINCHANA GOWDA: “It is not the end; I will come back with all my powers”

India’s No.1 and youngest female surfer started her journey four years back. She started surfing because it was an adventurous sport which she loved doing. She has won several laurels in her journey. Recently she won the first in quarter finals and got qualified till semi-finals but did not make it to the finals held at Mangalore in 2017. Are you a Predator or a Buddha when you on field?

I am a predator when I am on field.

One race that you are proud of

When I won the first place for the first time in National Surfing Championship in Mahabalipuram. Another match was when I lost in Surfing championship for the first time in Mangalore.These two matches are the ones that I am proud of.

What does it mean to you to represent India?

To represent India is like a dream come true. Words cannot explain the feeling when you represent your country.

You have a chance to play another sport. Which one?

I would prefer swimming.As it gives exercise to the whole body more over it makes your body fit.

Your ultimate achievement

My ultimate achievement is to win a gold medal in the 2020 Olympics for India. I would be really happy to win a medal for my country.

How will you want to be known in 10 years from now?

I would love to be known as an Olympian in the upcoming years. I would consider it as a life time achievement.

Area of your game you need to improve?

I think I will have to improve on my paddling and manoeuvre.

Is sports a natural talent or a skill that is developed?

I believe that sports is a natural talent and it is not something that is developed. It would be inherent.

Perks of being an athlete

We get lots of chance to visit many places, in a way it will help us to know different cuisines, heritage and their tradition. We also get much more holidays than other students.

Your first match for India

My first match for India was when I participated in Asian Surfing Championship (ASC)

Who had the greatest influence in your life

That’s definitely M.S Dhoni. The way he curtailed all hurdles in front of him and achieved what he dreamt off. He has influenced every Indian.

Common road blocks that stop racers from achieving their dreams?

There are so many obstacles that hinders the growth of an athlete but I think politics is something that must be chucked off from the field.

Your plans & preparations for TOKYO 2020

I am working hard for it and also having a healthy nutritional diet. I believe that I can achieve a medal.

One thing you will never do again?

I will never spend money on silly things and that too for chocolates without my mom's permission.

Your funniest childhood memory?

I have stolen money from my mom to buy dairy milk shots and it all ended up in beatings.

Your Achievements

1) Won second place in surfing in cove long point surf classic event, held at Chennai in 2014.

2) Won first place in standup paddle(SUP) and second place in kayaking in Manpad sail and surf festival, held at Tamil Nadu in 2015.

3) Won first place in surfing in Mahabs surf classic event, held at Mahabalipuram in 2015.

4) Won first place in surfing and third place in standup paddle (SUP) in the Indian open of surfing event, held at Mangalore in 2016.

5) Won first place in surfing and third place in stand up paddle (SUP) in covelong point surf and music festival, held at Chennai in 2016.
