General Interest

General
FROM SOMALIA TO BELGIUM
Born in Somalia, at age eight he and his family moved from Somalia to Djibouti, and his mother then relocated to Belgium for work. She wanted the whole family to join her but as there was no Belgian embassy in Djibouti, the rest of the family moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a year and a half before they were able to join his mother in Belgium. "The reunion was very emotional. I will never forget how we got to Zaventem [Belgium] in the evening. We were all crying. Everything was new to me." (stad.gent, 05 Jan 2016; sportaround.be, 01 Jan 2016; sportmagazine.knack.be, 09 May 2020)

CHARITY WORK
He is co-founder and vice-chairman of a non-profit organisation called Sportaround, which arranges after-school sporting activities for disadvantaged children in Ghent, Belgium. "I have experienced that myself, I know how difficult it is for some children to exercise. I just think it is very important to help people. Belgium has given me a lot and I would like to give something back. If I hadn't had all those opportunities in Belgium, I wouldn't be here for you today. I just want to leave something. I want to provide motivation for young people who arrived here just like me." (sportaround.be, 01 Jan 2016; stad.gent, 05 Jan 2016; sportmagazine.knack.be, 09 May 2020)
