Ferris comments that "Apparently some years ago, Lloyd Martin told Ron Leuschner that the moth does not belong in Lacinipolia and probably belongs in the Orthodes area. I concur. Selman did not include the species in his Lacinipolia revision. I have brushed away the terminal abdominal scales in the specimen that I have from Noel, and the genitalia clearly don't belong to a Lacinipolia. The moth superficially resembles Hexorthodes [formerly Polia] tuana, but the genitalia are quite different. Poole missed this one and retained it in Lacinipolia in his "Catalogus."

"Normal" crucialis is on the West Coast with ssp. peritalis (which looks quite different) in CO, UT, NM, and AZ. The trouble is that we have "normal looking" crucialis from AZ, CO, and UT along with the very different looking peritalis!! My suspicion is that peritalis is a good species but until doing some tails and re-checking the type I'll leave it at ssp. peritalis for now! (Comments of Don Lafontaine, June 2002.
