[close] Join us in our monthly China-themed book club, culminating in a live Zoom chat between WildChina's founder and author of Travels Through Dali with a Leg of Ham, Mei Zhang, and the author of the book we've read that month. Everyone and anyone welcome to join, even if you don't have time to read the book before the event (we'll do our best to avoid spoilers)!

[close] Every month this club explores a book of literature with a connection to a different country or culture. This group targets Toronto and Peterborough, but is not tied to Canadians. In fact, I encourage people from far and wide to join. The group is affiliated with meetup.com, but there are no fees for participants. There is a limit 16 people attending per meeting so it is necessary to sign up ahead of time. I’ve made a list of forty or so titles that appeal to me as possible book of the month choices. Book suggestions are welcome if they meet these guidelines: · The book must provide insights into a certain culture or conflict of culture (s). · The choice should be ‘literary’. In other words, no pulpy best sellers or simple coming of age stories. There are lots of books out there that have won prizes or have been short-listed for prestigious awards. · The choice should strive to ‘bounce around the globe’ so that the next month’s selection centres on a different continent than the last. - The choice should be readily accessible by the local public library. FORMAT: - The zoom link will be sent to you automatically as soon as you sign up through meetup. Each session will last no more than two hours. If you are new to Zoom and want to practice, send me a message and we can set up a time a few days before. - Participants will be capped at 16, so if you change your mind about attending, change your response to not attending or let me know at least one day ahead. The few meetings we’ve had so far have had some wonderful discussions!

[close] Saving the world, one book at a time since March 11, 2015. This group may offend those easily offended. We may get personal. We might (or will) get a little bawdy. We'll be talking about anything here, in casual conversation. So unless a remark promotes hate, viewpoints will not be censored. We want everyone to feel free to participate and join in the fun. This group is private, only to limit the lurking. Anyone can join in the fun. Swearing is allowed. Suggested 18+ or an otherwise adult mindset. This group is open to everyone. We have few rules, really. * Answer the challenge question when you join; this may require joining through the website rather than the app. * Be respectful and mindful of others! The good old "treat others how you wish to be treated" applies here as well. So unless a remark promotes hate, viewpoints will not be censored.
