With the special election for the 65th Assembly District finished, candidates are gearing up to unseat the new incumbent in the September primary.
Disgraced former speaker Sheldon Silver had groomed Alice Cancel as his replacement, and she handily won last Tuesday, despite an apparent lack of campaigning. However, she can’t rest on her laurels nor start decorating her office. Democratic District Leader Jenifer Rajkumar plans to announce her campaign tonight to bump Cancel from her new seat.
Rajkumar won’t be the only challenger, either. Paul Newell, Gigi Li, and Don Lee are all expected to throw down come autumn.
“This is the time for the possible,” candidate Rajkumar proclaims in a press announcement this morning. “I am running for State Assembly to replace the Albany culture of corruption with a culture of service. It is time to invest in a sense of collective destiny in which we are all in this together across different ethnicities, economic strata, and neighborhoods.”
