Ipswich finally found the route to goal with two goals inside the final 11 minutes as the Suffolk club won the battle between two of the promoted clubs at Portman Road.

Matt Holland and Marcus Stewart were the goalscorers, but Ipswich who enjoyed huge amounts of possession struggled to make their domination pay and Charlton came close on a number of occasions in the first half.

The home side made an impressive start with Jamie Clapham highly prominent on the left, but it was from the right, appropriately through Jermaine Wright that their early chances came.

The former Crewe man tested Kiely from 20 yards before his excellent run led to both his effort and one from Scowcroft being blocked on the edge of the Charlton box.

Dominance

Claus Jensen, who chose The Valley over Portman Road during the summer and was reminded of that by the home fans, met a Johansson cross at the near post and glanced it against the outside of the upright.

On 22 minutes Finnish striker Johannson wasted a great opportunity as he had only Richard Wright to beat following a swift Charlton break.

But the England keeper narrowed the angle and pushed Johansson's effort into the side-netting.

Mark Venus went close on two occasions, as Ipswich forced the pressure once again and Graham Stuart was shown the yellow card for a foul on Fabian Wilnis.

Team-mate Jon Robinson followed him into referee Steve Bennett's notepad for arguing with the decision.

But just as it looked like the breakthrough would never arrive Ipswich ensured that their record of scoring in every Premiership match this season remained intact.

Matt Holland, in his 183rd consecutive appearance for the Suffolk team, turned away from his Republic of Ireland colleague Mark Kinsella before blasting the ball home from 18 yards.

Once he had showed the route to goal, top scorer Stewart followed his lead, netting his seventh of the season. He looped the ball over Shields and Brown's efforts on the line were to no avail.

A Kiely error should have presented Clapham with a third but the former Tottenham man toe-poked the ball past an unattended goal.

It was a deserved victory for the home team, but they made their fans wait.
