A plane has crashed into a building in Italy, killing eight people.

The small private aircraft descended into a vacant property in a Milan suburb on Sunday.

All six passengers and two crew members on board the flight were killed, Associated Press reported.

A boy was among those killed in the crash, according to Italian news agency LaPresse.

No other casualties apart from those on the flight were reported.

The plane took off from Milan’s Linate city airport and was due to land on the island of Sardinia.

The passengers are believed to be French nationals.

Initial reports said that there were six casualties, but authorities have since revised the death toll.

A thick column of dark smoke rose from the crash site and was visible for kilometres.

Firefighters were extinguishing the flames of the now-charred building, which reportedly was under renovation.

Witnesses said several vehicles caught fire after the crash but they were unoccupied.
