A vehicle in front of the one he was driving had engine trouble and pulled over. But when L/Cpl Francis overtook the stationary vehicle, a roadside bomb detonated. The bomb blew a hole in the armoured vehicle. The coroner said there were no protective measures that could have saved his life.
