As Marvel Cinematic Universe fans begin to dissect the latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, many are convinced that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were digitally removed from the footage.
Shortly after the trailer debuted, social media began to break down the revealed footage frame-by-frame. Given the constantly swirling rumors that Garfield and Maguire are reprising their roles as Peter Parker in No Way Home, fans were hopeful that the new footage may tease their arrival. While they may not visually appear in the trailer, it could be the case that Disney edited out both actors to prevent any spoilers.

The most cited piece of evidence to this theory is the shot that appears at 2 minute and 22-second mark in the trailer. Tom Holland's Spider-Man leaps towards Thomas Haden Church's Sandman (last seen in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3) while Jaime Foxx's Electro and Rhys Ifans' Lizard (from Mark Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man films) leap at nothing. It's speculated that Garfield and Maguire are the remaining targets that have simply been edited out of the trailer cut.
To add fuel to the flames, a clip of the Brazilian cut of the trailer further suggests that multiple Spider-Men are present in No Way Home. This version of the trailer sees the aforementioned scene slightly extended, revealing that The Lizard is hit by what appears to be an invisible punch. Since no debris visibly strikes the villain, fans are taking this as confirmation that a Spider-Man that isn't Holland is also involved in the battle.
So Lizard fighting a ghost?! Yea, they cut Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield from this scene. They are 100% in the movie! #SpiderManNoWayHome pic.twitter.com/IHJMsGlXKB

If Marvel Studios can fake us out in one trailer, they can do it again. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are definitely on this scene #SpiderManNoWayHome pic.twitter.com/sVY1lJQydW

This wouldn't be the first time Marvel and Disney have tweaked trailer footage to avoid giving away spoilers. The promotional videos for Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War both contained tweaked visuals to avoid giving away specific plot points. In fact, Spider-Man has been edited out of another MCU video, as Tom Holland's Peter Parker was visibly absent in several key shots during the trailer for Captain America: Civil War.
The rumors regarding Garfield and Maguire's participation in No Way Home have spiraled for months. Both actors have outright denied being in the film. When questioned about a series of leaked images seemingly placing him alongside Holland and Maguire, Garfield responded, "I’ve heard about it. And I did see it. It’s a PhotoShop … I’m trying to manage expectations. If they want to give me a call at this late stage in the game, I’m sitting here in my tracksuit... I have [seen the trailer] and I’m excited, and I think that Tom Holland is just the perfect Peter Parker and Spider-Man so I’m just super stoked. And I get to just be a fan again, which is my preferred position."
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theatres on Dec. 17.
