  6. Southgate sees bright Gallagher future, published at12:29 15 November

Conor Gallagher has the “mentality” to reach beyond the level “a lot of players get to”, says England manager Gareth Southgate.

Gallagher – on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea – earned an England call-up for Monday’s World Cup qualifier against San Marino as a result of other squad members picking up injuries.

The 21-year-old midfielder has enjoyed an impressive season, scoring four Premier League goals in 10 games since joining Palace.

“To me, he is one of those characters that you can see his ability, but his mentality and his mindset look like they are going to take him beyond where a lot of players might get to,” Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It is clear the energy he plays with, the approach to every game, the desire, the willingness to work for the team.

“They are all attributes that we have seen in other players that have progressed and had good careers.

“He is still in those formative stages, but he has earned the right to be with us, without a doubt.”

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have been ranking their Premier League top-10 moments again.

On this week’s Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast the subject is the biggest upsets in Premier League history.

Liverpool’s late collapse at Crystal Palace late in the 2013-14 campaign will be remembered for Luis Suarez’s tears and was key as the Reds gave up real hope of ending their wait for a first league title since 1990.

Liverpool – then managed by Brendan Rodgers – led 3-0 with 11 minutes remaining but left with only a point, meaning Manchester City could crucially edge ahead in the title race.

“Liverpool had lost at home to Chelsea in the previous game - the damage was already done,” said Richards. “Manchester City went on to win the league by two points. Even if Liverpool had beaten Palace, City had a superior goal difference. I wanted Steven Gerrard to win a Premier League title because he's top level.”

  11. MOTD Top 10 - Townsend's rocket, published at16:03 10 November

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have been ranking their Premier League top-10 moments again.

On this week’s Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast the subject is the biggest upsets in Premier League history.

Andros Townsend’s superb volley sticks in the memory from Crystal Palace’s shock win at Manchester City in the 2018-19 campaign.

Palace’s 3-2 victory was their first success at City in 28 years.

Richards said: “Andros Townsend's goal was sublime. City were on a good run and it was at Etihad Stadium. Once City start playing it's impossible to play there. It had to be a wonder goal and Palace deserved it.”

Lineker added: “I remember being in the Match of the Day office and every now and again everyone leaps up going 'wow' when they see something special. Townsend's goal was one of those moments.”

  12. 'Vieira will take Palace to better things', published at13:32 10 November

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira is doing a “wonderful job”, says the club’s former manager Roy Hodgson.

Vieira, 45, succeeded Hodgson during the summer and his side sit 10th in the Premier League after back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Wolves.

"I think Patrick's learnt a lot from quite a few people along the way but there's no doubt that he's done a wonderful job so far at Crystal Palace,” said Hodgson, who spent four years at the club.

"I'm delighted to see that and, of course, I'm really convinced he's going to go on to better things with the club.

"Because the club's in very good shape - especially in his hands - so I certainly wish him well.”

Palace are unbeaten in their last six Premier League outings and face a trip to 18th-placed Burnley in their next fixture on 20 November.

  14. Tuesday talking point: The switching 'isms' of a Palace fan, published at17:37 9 November

Terence Ford, Back of the Nest podcast, external

Supporting a club of Crystal Palace’s stature cements an element of pessimism in one’s psyche. Whenever things are going well almost everyone will be counting down the days to the wheels coming off.

Could this time be different? How far can we ride this Patrick Vieira-sized wave?

I watched Crystal Palace v Wolves from the Legends Restaurant at Selhurst Park and former manager Alan Smith spoke after the game on the different feeling there is around the club.

The new academy is in place, the squad has genuine quality in depth and we are playing on the front foot.

The whispers of Palace making Europe weaving their way through the room before kick-off had transformed into fans singing “we’re all going on a European tour” as Smith was introduced at full-time.

Back in 2016, when Jason Puncheon gave Palace the lead with 12 minutes to go in the FA Cup final, I shoved my pessimism to one side and allowed myself to believe. I should have learned my lesson, but there I was singing of a maiden flight into Europe for the Eagles.

Only Manchester City are better at the back in terms of the quality of chances we allow. We’ve already played the current top four away from home. We are unbeaten at home. We’ve taken double the points we did from the comparable fixtures last season. I could go on.

I’ve probably set myself up for a mighty fall, but I believe with all my heart that this time is different. My ‘isms’ are switching from pessimism to optimism.
