The United States Department of the Interior has designated 57 national historic landmarks, including such New York City business structures as Macy's Herald Square store, the Tiffany & Company building, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company building.
Under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, Federal grants are available to help improve registered properties. The Tax Reform of 1976 provides incentives for the rehabilitation of income‐producing properties.
Other buildings named as landmarks include, in Chicago, the Marshall Field & Company store; the old Montgomery Ward & Company complex; the old Sears, Roebuck & Company complex and in San Francisco the Bank of Italy building,
