DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY: FAST FACTS

June 16, 1911—Opening of the first La Salle school in the Philippines on Calle Nozaleda in Paco, Manila

St. John Baptist de La Salle, patron of Christian teachers and founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools

Green and White (G&W)—Official school colors and name of the student publication that first came out in August 1924; green was based on the national color of Ireland, where the founding fathers of the De La Salle Brothers came from, while white represented the Philippines

Greenies—the high school team’s nickname before 1939

1940—The first Archer symbol appeared in G&W, which referred to the school’s basketball players as the “Green Archers” for the first time.

The Green Archer statue, now standing at the Chess Plaza, was done by Ed Castrillo in 1985.

The Signum Fidei star, the five-pointed star at the center of the school logo, symbolizes faith and hope and also the La Salle Brothers; the five points represent benevolence, civility, humanitarianism, service-oriented goals, and scientific pursuits.

There are a total of 17 La Salle schools in the Philippines, the first opened in 1911 and the last established in 2006.
