Huskers Overwhelm Bender’s Ichabods

Washburn No Match for the Stiehmrollers and Suffered 47 to 0 Defeat

Rutherford, Caley, Chamberlain, Doyle and Others Gallop Over for Touchdowns

Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 16 – The Nebraska Cornhuskers toyed with Washburn College here this afternoon, nearly every member of the squad getting into the fracas before it wound up with the Cornhuskers on the long end of the lopsided score of 47 to 0. Thirty-four of these points were rolled up in the first two quarters, when the majority of the regulars were in the game.

Subs of many kinds filled in the Nebraska ranks and the Washburn aggregation had an easier time of it.

There was no withstanding the ripping attack of the Cornhusker interference never worked better this season and time and time again Washburn was unable to penetrate the wall thrown about the Cornhuskers with the ball. The light line of the Ichabods was easily pierced by the Nebraska backs.
The Cornhuskers were not handicapped this time by a bunch of penalties, but twenty yards being their punishment for offside, and none for holding, a startling contrast with the bad work of the previous game.

Part of the third quarter was decidedly in favor of the Ichabods. Opening up a series of brilliant forward passes against the second stringers of Nebraska, they swept down into the shadow of the Husker goal, planting the ball on the three-yard line, where the pupils of Stiehm stiffened and held the Topekans for downs as the whistle blew for the end of the period.

It was little “Pinky” Beales, the Washburn quarter, who was responsible for this attack of the Ichabods. He flipped and shot, passed and tossed forward passes to the right and left, with Stewart, Newell or Champney on the receiving end until the Huskers were up in the air. One flip of fourteen yards was followed by another for thirty, and with the ball on the Cornhuskers’ twenty-five-yard line, Halbersinben, the sub Nebraska center, intercepted a toss. He fumbled it and Washburn recovered. The march was resumed until the stone wall was formed and the mirage of a score seen by the Ichabods vanished.

Nebraska did not uncover anything for the benefit of any spying scouts who might have been on the scene. It was straight football for the Stiehm machine. Yard and yard was covered by the speedy aggregation of backs and ends, Rutherford, Proctor, who held down Reese’s job today, Chamberlain and Riddell rambling over the lot almost at will, and Caley and Doyle adding a needed yard or two now and then.

Four minutes were sufficient for the Cornhuskers to make the first touchdown. Washburn punted immediately after getting the ball on the kickoff. Caley returned the ball thirty yards and Chamberlain sprinted around right end for twenty-five more. It was another procession down the field for the Nebraskans. Rutherford made the first score and Caley added the second.
Proctor, Chamberlain, Riddell and Rutherford carried the ball straight down the field and Doyle went over for the third touchdown.

The Nebraska subs started going into the line at this juncture and from this time it looked like a procession of subs going out and relieved players coming in.

In the second quarter Washburn got the ball several times. No effort was made to plunge the line. Beale opened up a series of forward and lateral passes, but all failed and the Ichabods were forced to punt. Down the field went the Cornhuskers, Chamberlain finishing the rush with an eleven-yard dash for another touchdown.

The fifth score came a bit slower, but Otopalik, Seltzer and Rasmussen soon went through for the touchdown just before the period was over. One forward pass was attempted by the Cornhuskers in this period and it netted thirteen yards, Corey to Cook. The period ended with Nebraska again threatening.

In the third period, Otopalik intercepted a Washburn pass on the Nebraska thirty-yard line and another touchdown soon resulted, seventy yards being made on straight line bucks and end runs.
At this, Beales uncorked his amazing repertoire of forward passes and Washburn swept down to the Nebraska ten-yard line. Beales made a five-yard plunge and then lost the ball on a fumble, which Stewart recovered. A pass, Beales to Champney, took the ball to Nebraska’s three-yard line, and then the Cornhuskers held.

Otopalik punted out of danger at the opening of the fourth quarter. Washburn was again held for downs and Nebraska took the ball. On line smashes and end runs, play went to the center of the field, and Seltzer punted. Seltzer intercepted a pass on Washburn’s twenty-yard line and broke away for the final touchdown.

Play was in the center of the field for the remaining few minutes of the game.
