The finals of Darjeeling&’s much fan-fared ‘All India Brigade of Gorkha’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2014’ today ended with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) football club from Mumbai striking a bulky win over the Dalhousie Athletic Club (DAC) of Kolkata with five goals.
Until the half time the ONGC had scored one to nil while the DAC team was then seen putting their best efforts but to no avail.
The ONGC players, only into 10 minutes of the game, managed to leak the opposition’s goal keeper but the referee whistled it as ‘off side.’ However within the next 15 minutes a free kick pass to the team’s striker Kailash Patil (No 13) with his fantastic heading had scored for the team.
The half time ended with ONGC leading the game with one goal at the Lebong ground here.
The game strategy of DAC was then seen changed a bit with the defense players of the team playing half line. One of the ONGC players long passed the ball to fill the gap, Lavino Fernandez (No 36) had quickly netted one more for the team.
The DAC fans thought there is still room to chase but in next couple of minutes Patil again scored one more. The score was now 3-0. The game technique of ONGC became unbreakable for the DAC the whole time until the referee blew the final whistle. On the other hand the day was not quite favorable for the Kolkata team. Of the many attempts, one corner shot by the DAC player had directly hit the goal post deflecting it outside, and later, it became a mammoth task for the team to get past the goal keeper of ONGC. Meanwhile Patil cracked down another score for the team. Then after the spectators slowly went out of the Lebong Stadium when the score became 4-0.
However the game was still on. The team members of DAC had now got 2 yellow cards. In the last 10 minutes of the game the ONGC captain, Fanai Lalmuanpuia, then scored one more with the final score being 5-0.
The winning team ONGC of Mumbai seized this year’s all India Brigade of Gorkha’s Gold Cup 2014 and also the prize money of Rs 3 lakh while the DAC team of Kolkata was handed over with 2 lakh prize money.
Patil was awarded as the man of the match for his three goals in the final match.
