MANILA, Philippines — Senator Grace Poe said she was grateful and “humbled” by the enactment of a law renaming an avenue after his father Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ).

President Rodrigo Duterte has recently signed Republic Act No. 11608, renaming Roosevelt Avenue in the first legislative district of Quezon City to  Duterte OKs renaming Roosevelt Avenue in QC to Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue .

“My family and I are grateful and humbled by this legislation. FPJ Avenue gives my father’s works and legacy a sense of place in our nation’s history,” Poe said in a statement on Thursday.

She likewise thanked her fellow lawmakers in both houses of Congress who pushed for the bill that described FPJ as a “cultural icon and champion of the masses.”

During the Senate voting on the measure, Poe abstained due to conflict of interest.

Poe hoped that Filipinos who would traverse along the 2.9-kilometer avenue would be reminded that goals are attainable.

“For every Filipino, every ‘probinsyano’ (those from provinces) who will pass along this avenue, we hope this serves as a physical reminder that no dream is too big and no goal is ever out of reach,” she said.

“Nawa’y magsilbing ehemplo ng katatagan, pagpupunyagi at pag-asa ang buhay ni FPJ sa ating mga kababayan,” continued Poe.

(May FPJ’s life serve as an example of courage, determination, and hope to our fellow citizens.)

The late Poe was hailed as the king of Philippine movies as he starred in about 300 action films in his 46-year acting career.

He was also declared as a national artist by then-President Benigno Aquino III.
