SCARSDALE – The new Village of Scarsdale law that prohibits smoking of tobacco and cannabis on public property takes effect on January 1.

The legislation prohibits the burning of a lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe or cape system containing tobacco or cannabis at village facilities, recreation spaces, and public streets and sidewalks in the village center, any business districts, or buffer parking zone.

The village is giving a 60-day transition period during which the police department will only issue warnings for violations of the law.

After the grace period, fines of $100 per violation can be levied.
