I am getting weary of reading articles in which Americans advise other Americans about how to negotiate the future of #Ukraine. (Thread) 1/

We are not fighting in Ukraine, and so we do not decide when the fighting stops, or on what terms. 2/

This war would have been avoided had #Russia treated #Ukraine as a sovereign state, and negotiated with it. 3/

In this incredible footage, we see a Chechen soldier ( probably the pointman) pinned down behind a vehicle at the entrance of a courtyard(Azovstal complex Mariupol).

Typically, to any element defending, a wounded enemy soldier is worth a lot because
while a dead comrade is a dead comrade, you can't abandon a wounded soldier to the enemy. You have to make every effort to rescue him, and expend further resources, including fuel and medical services, in case you succeed. Which is why snipers often shoot to wound
the second/third guy in an advancing column and then pick off anyone who comes to the rescue.That way they take a couple more potential hostages in a preset field of fire . But here we see that someone shot possibly the first guy to cross the threshold. So, seems like a

Update #Ukraine .
Im Überblick:
- russ. Truppen ziehen sich aus dem Großraum #Kiew zurück;
- massive Verlegungen in den #Donbass ;
- ukr. Armee führt Helikopter-Angriff auf russisches Territorium aus;

VDV-Einheiten gehalten.
Nun wurden auch die VDV-Verbände (Fallschirmjäger) abgezogen.

Thread on #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine - April 2
🚩Lots of changes over the past 24 hours:
- Russian forces have been pushed out of the #Kyiv Oblast.
- Kyiv-Chernihiv highway clear of Russian forces
- Counter-offensive along the Dnieper north of Kyiv
🚩One thing I find particularly notable: There are reports that Ukrainian forces pushed northeast of Ivankiv, and are now around 20km southwest of Chernobyl (I am still trying to confirm with visual evidence).

1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 37: Today’s update focuses on each of the Strategic Fronts in the UTW. BLUF, Ukraine has defeated Russian forces along the Kyiv-Chernihiv & Sumy Fronts. East Ukraine is now the focal point of operations. #Ukraine #UkraineWar #RussiaUkraineWar Image
2/ Humanitarian Impact. Ukrainian refugees exceed 5.4 million, with 6.5 million IDPs throughout Ukraine. As Russian forces pull out of NW Kyiv, the brutality of their occupation is more apparent. Russia continues to block aid convoys access to Mariupol.
3/ Weather assessment. Thunderstorms & wintery mix remain in the forecast & will continue to adversely affect aerospace and ground operations. Poor weather may hamper Ukrainian attempts to disrupt the Russian retreat from Kyiv. Temperatures generally will remain between 17/ 0 C.

Five weeks have passed since the beginning of the Russian invasion of #Ukraine. Today I examine the entry of Russian mercenaries into the conflict, based on my recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald. smh.com.au/national/russi… 1/16
2/16 In mid-March, it was clear Russia was failing to achieve its objectives in Ukraine - it needed a new theory of victory. Since then, it has shifted to a strategy which might be described as ‘seize the east and terrorise the Ukrainians into submission.’ smh.com.au/national/putin…
3/16 While it is debatable whether this is working, part of the new approach from Russia is the use of mercenaries. 1000 members of the Wagner Group, a private company based in Russia, are expected to deploy and conduct combat operations in Ukraine. csis.org/blogs/post-sov…

Welcome to the weekend and to Day 38 of the Kremlin war on #Ukraine.

More morale problems for Russia with irradiated troops, heavy losses amid the withdrawal from #Kyiv and still question marks over the bombing of the fuel depot on Russian soil.

All the news, all day, in this🧵
I am still gathering news and data on the Russian attacks on #Ukraine during the night.

#Kharkiv again looks to be worst hit, with endless explosions heard. Some fires burn - this one video submitted. Remember exact locations cannot be revealed, hence the blurring

#SaveUkraine
British intelligence highlights the two recent incidents in #Belgorod, the Russian city close to the border with Ukraine.

Although Ukraine denied the attacks, UK wouldn't highlight this unless it believed they did it, so I bow to the military intel.

It's a bit unfair to compare MANPADS (#Javelin) to a squad-level weapon (#Stugna) -
- but yeah there seems to be a *gap* in the known & observed effectiveness.

#RedEffect delivers:

2/
The Stugna (aka #Skif) #ATGM system is pretty neat, especially for defenses, static warfare & prepared ambushes. Also has a vehicular derivative for mobile warfare - a remotely controlled station courtesy of yet another #Ukraine-#Turkey cooperation.

"All right, let me be a traitor but I will tell the truth. Within reasonable limits of course. Our division fighting on the right bank of Dnipr at Hostomel, Bucha, Irpin, is bogged down in the urban fighting, bogged down in the forests and marshes of that area. "
"And once those forests green out in a month they will be shot at from every bush. Despite the large amounts of machinery and troops they don’t have enough to take on this terrain."

🧵Lots to parse here, but it seems significant.

"#Kazakhstan respects the territorial integrity of #Ukraine. We did not recognise and will not recognise the Crimea situation and neither the Donbas situation because the UN does not recognise them." euractiv.com/section/centra…
First, it's clear that #Kazakhstan is playing defense here, concerned about the possibility that it could face sanctions. The fact this message is directed at Europe (in Euractiv) drives that point home.
Timur Suleimenov's main message is that #Kazakhstan won't help #Russia evade sanctions. His second message is explanatory: Yes, we will continue trading with and investing with Russia. There's only so much we can distance ourselves from Moscow.

[Thread] New 🧵 on the #StrategicCompass, this time on one timely provision of the EU treaties: the mutual assistance clause (article 42-7 TEU).
eeas.europa.eu/eeas/strategic… Image
1/ Introduced by the Lisbon Treaty, the "mutual assistance clause" of article 42(7) of the Treaty on EU states that if a member state is the victim of “armed aggression on its territory” other states have an “obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in their power.” Image
The clause does "not prejudice the specific character of the security and defense policy of certain Member States" (neutral countries), and is "consistent with commitments under NATO, which remains [for its members] the foundation of their collective defense."
