The Economic Structure of an Outpost in the Outer Islands in the Indonesian Archipelago: Portuguese Timor 1850–1975

  • Chapter

Abstract

‘A land forgotten by God and man it is which dies the slow death of one who expires through utter exhaustion’ (Bron 1923 : 102). This summary judgment by a Dutch seacaptain of the state of affairs in Portuguese Timor, some 55 years ago, may serve as an introduction to a preliminary sketch of the economic structure of this ‘remnant of empire’ (Remnants of Empire 1960: 585) or ‘reanimated relic’ (Hanna 1966).1
