Maggie Rhee left her Hilltop compound on Sunday's midseason finale of The Walking Dead and ended up almost losing a vicious fight to the death with Leah Shaw.

The season 11 episode titled Acts Of God climaxed with Maggie [Lauren Cohan] making her way alone through the forest, but she could hear someone else approaching.

Maggie then saw Leah [Lynn Collins] and fired, hitting her. Leah was injured, but was able to run and somehow surprised Maggie, hitting her on the head. When Maggie awoke, Leah was sitting in front of her tied to a chair in an abandoned house.

'I have waited for this moment for a long time,' Leah said pointing a gun at Maggie.

'You can't kill me,' Maggie said. 'That would be too easy. If that was what you wanted, you would have done it already. You want me to suffer.'

Maggie told her that it wouldn't help her get rid of her pain.

'You're wrong,' Leah said. 'It's not just you. By the time I'm done, everyone you love will be dead.'

Nearby, Deputy Governor of the Commonwealth Lance Hornsby [Josh Hamilton] and his soldiers searched the woods also looking for Maggie. Lance found a bloody cloth and instructed the soldiers to move forward.

'I guess that makes us even,' Maggie said. 'I took your family, you take mine.'

'I killed your people because it was what I wanted,' Maggie said as she worked to untie her hands that were tied behind her back.

Dead wrong: 'You're wrong,' Leah said. 'It's not just you. By the time I'm done, everyone you love will be dead'

 Leah kept her handgun pointed at Maggie.

'Go ahead,' Maggie said. 'You want it so do it.'

Maggie was able to untie her hands and smacked Leah. The two struggled. Maggie stabbed Leah and then Leah knocked Maggie down. Leah slashed Maggie and slammed her against the wall. Leah then flipped Maggie on to the floor and then got on top of her and began repeatedly punching Maggie in the face.

Just as Leah pulled out a knife to stab Maggie in the throat a shot ran out. Daryl Dixon [Norman Reedus] had quietly entered the cabin, drew his gun and killed Leah. Daryl then looked out the window and saw that the stormtroopers and Lance were approaching the cabin and he that knew they had to leave quickly.

The episode started with the headline '19 Hours And One Act of God Ago' with Maggie and her son Hershel Rhee [Kien Michael Spiller] leaving the Hilltop compound.

'You have everything?' Maggie asked Hershel.

'I'm not a baby anymore, mom,' Hershel said. 'I don't want to go.'

Elijah [Okea Eme-Akwari] and Marco [Gustavo Gomez] walked out of the compound with them.

Elsewhere in the woods, Lance was with a group of his stormtroopers and told them that he had an assignment for them.

Back at Commonwealth, Eugene Porter [Josh McDermitt] was waking up in bed smiling as Max Mercer [Margot Bingham] looked through a book.

'I thought we had a lovely night, didn't we?' Eugene said.

'Yeah, we did,' Max said smiling.

'You are beautiful in every way,' Eugene said.

The two kissed and then Max said she had to get ready for work. Eugene asked her if she had hesitations over using her job to gather information on the Commonwealth, but she said she didn't.

'I just can't stop thinking about what happens after we do this,' Max said. 'This place pushes on people to keep things the same. I just worry they'll keep pushing till we all break.'

Daryl, Father Gabriel [Gabriel Stokes] and Aaron [Ross Marquand],armed with rifles, were working on clearing a house of walkers along with the Commonwealth soldiers.

'We are in this s*** till we find a way to fight our way out,' Aaron said to them when the soldiers were out of range.

'Look, we keep heading north, away from our group,' Daryl said. 'We find our moment, we take it.'

Two stormtroopers walked in.

'Hey, what's with the chit-chat?' one of the troopers asked.

Daryl told them that they needed a break, but the trooper told him to keep working. He asked the trooper if they had checked Charleston yet because there was rumor that it was a place where they could trade for weapons.

Two walkers suddenly came out of one of the home's rooms. One of them grabbed the trooper Romano [Matt Bushell] and tried to bite him. The trooper struggled and Daryl took his time killing the other walker leaving Romano to fend for himself.

Romano ultimately was able to bash the walker to pieces as blood spattered on his white uniform. He then reported over the radio that the 'second location is cleared, one more to go.'

'Hornsby's checking in on us,' Daryl whispered to Gabriel and Aaron.

'We need to watch our backs,' Gabriel said.

'Yeah,' Daryl said.

A swarm of locusts buzzed through the sky, as Maggie, Hershel, Elijah and Marco made their way through the woods. Lydia [Cassady McClincy] was waiting behind a tree for them.

'You made it,' Lydia said.

In another part of the forest, Leah Shaw [Lynn Collins] was returning to her tent taking off weapons that she had strapped to her body. Lance was there waiting for her.

'Things are coming together, ' Lance said to Leah. 'You get the scalp of the woman that killed your family, and I finally get to do my job without interference. Everybody wins. Well, not everybody.'

Above them were the sounds of thousands of locusts. Lance told Leah that he would need to see proof that Maggie was dead.

'I'll need to see her when she's dead,' Lance said.

'You will,' Leah said as she set off into the woods with a group of black ops soldiers.

Meanwhile, Maggie and her group continued to make their way through the forest. Lydia then pulled back a wood pile that was used to camouflage an entrance to a cave where a group including Negan Smith [Jeffrey Dean Morgan] were hiding out.

'Hey kid,' Negan said to Hershel.

Maggie told Negan and Annie Smith [Medina Senghore] that Lance and his men were coming for her and that Elijah spotted them five miles outside her walls the previous night.

'You helped us and I am grateful,' Negan said. ' 'And I got no problem watching the kid at all. But Annie, my wife is pregnant, so there is no way I'm going to sit in some Whisper worm hole while you are out, I don't know, saving some s***hole of a home that's not worth saving. '

'He's right,' Maggie said. 'Maybe Hilltop isn't worth saving but those people are. This fight that I'm in, that I started, with Hornsby it's not going to end until I end it.'

'And I got no doubt that you will,' Negan said. 'But I also got no doubt that you are firmly in the cross hairs of this Lance a**hole so I'm coming with you.'

'No, I'll finish it,' Maggie said.

Ending it: 'He's right,' Maggie said. 'Maybe Hilltop isn't worth saving but those people are. This fight that I'm in, that I started, with Hornsby it's not going to end until I end it'

'Maggie, we can help fight,' Medina said.

Maggie told Annie that she needed her to stay there and take care of Hershel and the others. Negan said to Maggie that he felt that Hershel doesn't exactly trust him.

'But I'm starting too,' Maggie said. 'You saved him at Riverbend. Whatever else happens and whatever else has happened, I will never forget that.'

The group then noticed the loud sound of locusts.

'Oh s***,' Negan said. 'If that ain't a sign from the man upstairs, I don't know what is.'

Lance called his stormtroopers on the walkie-talkie and told them to hurry up with their mission to clear the second location and then to come back to the camp.

'Once last sweep, then home,' Romano said to Daryl.

'All right, great,' Daryl said. 'I'll lead.'

Daryl, Aaron, Gabriel walked through a field littered with broken down vehicles followed by Romano and the storm troopers. Daryl decided the field was the perfect place for them to make their move. Daryl turned his gun on the troopers and started shooting. Gabriel and Aaron ran for cover. Daryl was able to grab a semi-automatic weapon from one of the fallen troopers and then threw it to Aaron.

Aaron started shooting. Gabriel was able to stab one of the troopers in the leg, grabbed his weapon and joined the others in killing the remaining stormtroopers.

Romano, injured and bleeding, tried to crawl away but Daryl stopped him.

'Where's Hornsby,' Daryl demanded.

'Screw you,' Romano said.

One arm: Aaron started shooting despite only having one arm

A group of walkers approached. Daryl told him it was his choice to be eaten by walkers or he could kill him.

'Maybe 10 miles out,' Romano said. 'He said he wanted to clear the field.'

Daryl shot him.

'Clear the field?' Aaron said.

'Leave only allies behind,' Gabriel said.

'Maggie,' Aaron said.

Lance called over for Romano on the walkie-talkie.

'He ain't here anymore,' Daryl picked it up and said.

Lance was shocked. He yelled at the troopers he was with to move.

Back at Commonwealth, Governor Pamela Milton [Laila Robins] was practicing a speech in front of her assistant Max. Max just stared at her.

'You okay?' Pamela asked her. 'You seem far away.'

'No, I'm good,' Max said. 'I'm right here.'

'Max if you are having a bad day you can tell me,' Pamela said. 'I do get it, you know?'

Max assured her that she was really okay. Max told her also that accounting sent over the Founder's Day budget and that there was a $50,000 surplus.

Good question: 'You okay?' Pamela asked her. 'You seem far away'

'I was going to suggest something if you're open to it?' Max said. 'How about starting a scholarship fund for our less fortunate families?'

'I love your out of the box thinking but any extra funds go right back into the event,' Pamela said. 'It's our biggest day of the year.'

Max reminded her that she had a dinner to attend. Pamela thanked her and said she didn't know what she would do without her.

'You are leaving soon too? Pamela asked.

'Right behind you,' Max said.

Scholarship fund: 'I was going to suggest something if you're open to it?' Max said. 'How about starting a scholarship fund for our less fortunate families?'

Instead of leaving, though, Max stayed and rummaged through Pamela's office. She found a file called 'Resettlements' and was shocked by all the names on the list. As she was looking over the file, Sebastian Milton [Teo Rapp-Olson], Gov. Milton's son walked in startling her.

'I'm sorry,' Sebastian said. 'I didn't mean to scare you.'

Sebastian asked Max if she knew if his mother was mad at him.

'I keep asking for her and nothing,' Sebastian said.

'It's just been a hectic afternoon,' Max said.

Sebastian told Max that he needed to talk to her. Max said Pamela was at a work dinner but that she could 'get word to her.'

'Get word to her,' Sebastian said. 'Yeah, why don't you get word to her for me.'

Max told him that she was actually just on her way out. Sebastian said she was always working and saw she was taking work home with her holding the file. Max dropped the file when Sebastian tried to grab it. She told him she had one too many coffees.

'Poor man's drug,' Sebastian said.

Sebastian walked out of the office and Max breathed a sigh of relief and then hid the file inside her jacket.

Meanwhile, Maggie prepared for battle with Lydia and Elijah. Later, the black ops troopers entered the house that Maggie had been using as a hideout. The house blew up on the troopers when they opened a booby trapped door.

Maggie, Elijah, Lydia and Marco [Gustavo Gomez] watched the explosion hiding in the nearby woods.

'See if you can recover any of their weapons,' Maggie instructed. 'Follow their trail back to their camp, and then we end this.'

Marco stood up and then was shot and killed by Leah as she walked out of the burning house.

'Get down,' Maggie yelled.

Leah set off to hunt for Maggie and the others in the woods as thousands of locusts flew through the night sky around her. Lance arrived at the location only to find the burnt out house and his troopers dead. He also found Marco's body outside. He called for Leah over the walkie-talkie.

'I drew them out,' Leah said. 'I'm doing this my way.'

'Your way got my men killed!' Lance said.

'Collateral damage,' Leah said.

Lance threw his walkie-talkie down in anger. One of his soldiers [Gonzalo Menendez] told Lance that they had soldiers spread out a 10 mile perimeter and would find Maggie and the others.

'You Goddamn better,' Lance said.

Daryl, Aaron and Gabriel also made their way through the woods. They saw dead soldiers and knew that Lance was near. Aaron found a bloody cloth in the woods and Daryl recognized it immediately.

'Leah,' Daryl said. 'I think we should split up to cover more ground.'

Maggie, Elijah and Lydia hid out in the forest quietly killing any walker that approached. Maggie told them they needed to split up and that she would lead Leah away.

'I will not risk losing you two,' Maggie said.

'We can handle ourselves, Maggie,' Lydia said. 'We'll draw them away, too, and then, when everyone's safe, will just go and meet up with the others.'

'I'll find you,' Maggie said.

Maggie then stood alone in the forest as Leah made her way through the woods holding the gun which ultimately led to their deadly confrontation.

Back at Commonwealth, Max brought the file to Eugene's apartment where Connie [ Lauren Ridloff], Kelly [Angel Theory], and Magna [Nadia Hilker] poured over the list. Lauren noticed right away that the soldier Tyler Davis and the woman that Rosita tried to help out during the heist's names were on the list.

'I counted 200,' Kelly said.

'What about these numbers' Max asked. 'They look like codes. Maybe coordinates?'

'So you think this is where they are hiding people?' Magna said.

Connie told them that she needed proof, a key to crack the code, before she published something so explosive. Connie said she would write about Sebastian's heist.

'When everyone finds out she is not on their side, they are going to question everything about this place,' Kelly said.

Ezekeil [Khary Payton] knocked on the apartment door and came in. Magna told them she invited him over to help them get the article out.

'I've got a whole network ready, and willing to ride at dawn,'Ezekeil said.

Lauren asked if they were doing this and they all agreed that they were.

'Let's ride,' Max said.

Daryl shot out the window hitting Lance in the face. He then grabbed Maggie and ran out of the cabin. Lance entered the cabin bleeding and saw Leah dead on the ground.

'Now we take it all,' Lance said.

Maggie, covered in blood, and Daryl walked through a field with Aaron and Gabriel by her side. Negan was with the others including Hershel waiting for her to come back.

At Commonwealth, Max put the file she took back into Pamela's office. As soon as she sat back at her desk, Pamela walked in with a stack of newspapers with the headline reading 'Milton Is Lying To You' with the article about how Milton's adult son used innocents in a deadly money grab.' Max looked at her feigning shock.

At Alexandria and at Hilltop, a Commonwealth banner was unfurled outside the gates. Stormtroopers had taken over control of the compounds. Lance walked through the Oceanside compound smiling with the occupants there now his prisoners. The episode ended with Lance flipping a coin in front of them.

The Walking Dead will return in the fall on AMC with third and final part of its final season trilogy.
