Tqthe formulaic eerie noises, cobwebbed stairways, crashing glassware and unbelievable coincidences, the writing team of William Gray andDiana Maddox, working from a story by Russell Hunter, add only a child's rubber ball that keegrbouncing back to you-know-who. TEe story was obviously familiar to the audience I was a part of. After each carefully elicited scream, the conversational volume rose slowly, reaching almost disco pitch before dropping again as director Peter Medak began the next crescendo. ..The actors have all been much better. Trish Van Devere has nothing to do but look fearful, and Mejvyn Douglas seems hypnotized even before he must die in flames for something done to him when he was 6 (rather excessive revenge, even for aghast). Scott is OK. It's not his fault that he never shows fear amid the strange goings-on; he does do a great quizzical stare. And when he cusses the ghost.that is complicating his life, he is funny.
