Scott Trish Van Devere Routine horror haunts 'Changeling' By Michael Maza KepuMic SufT The only special thing about The Changeling is the way it was financed 264 shares sold for $25,000 per in a pioneering offering approved by the Ontario Securities Commission. That's $6.6 million, if my multiplication is right A Hollywood stock exchange could turn out to be great news for gamblers itching to trade their bookies for upright brokers imagine calling in buys .on Bo Derek's next picture or sells on Richard Gere's ("Dammit, Walter, I tell ya he's peaktd.") Handicapping the flicks would spawn a whole nw generation of tip sheets. Miss Rona could offfifB morning line. And Jillie's cousin's brother's secretary's sister, the froufrou clerk at Bloomie's, could retire on the proceeds of Rex Reed touts. , Ahthe possibilities .... Joj-those of us who merely watch movies, however, this new ripple in financing heralds nothing more than increased trafficking in "sure things." ' The Changeling, here, now, stars sure thing George C. Scott in a sure-thing haunted house storyr And it is as routine a picture as we've seen since the Whammyville Horriblenesa or whatever that tribute to Goofus Americanus was called. Tqthe formulaic eerie noises, cobwebbed stairways, crashing glassware and unbelievable coincidences, the writing team of William Gray andDiana Maddox, working from a story by Russell Hunter, add only a child's rubber ball that keegrbouncing back to you-know-who. TEe story was obviously familiar to the audience I was a part of. After each carefully elicited scream, the conversational volume rose slowly, reaching almost disco pitch before dropping again as director Peter Medak began the next crescendo. ..The actors have all been much better. Trish Van Devere has nothing to do but look fearful, and Mejvyn Douglas seems hypnotized even before he must die in flames for something done to him when he was 6 (rather excessive revenge, even for aghast). Scott is OK. It's not his fault that he never shows fear amid the strange goings-on; he does do a great quizzical stare. And when he cusses the ghost.that is complicating his life, he is funny. But the picture's funniest moment comes when Errrfessor of music Scott seeks help with his auntine problem from a university colleague, a balmy-looking type in a- white lab coat They consult in doorway, under a sign that says Psychic Department THE CHANGELING An Associated Film Distribution release produced by Joel B.
