MANILA, Philippines -- The historical biopic "El Presidente," about the life of President Emilio Aguinaldo, dominated the 29th PMPC Star Awards on Sunday night., winning eight awards including Movie of the Year.

"El Presidente," which had 12 nominations going into Sunday's awards night, was again up matched up against "One More Try" after their initial showdown at the Metro Manila Film Festival in December, where the Star Cinema drama was named festival best picture.
"One More Try" managed only one win at the Star Awards with lead star Angel Locsin winning Movie Actress of the Year.
"One More Try" and another Star Cinema movie "The Mistress" had the most nominations at this year's Star Awards with 13 nods each. But the John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo starrer went home empty-handed on Sunday.
"El Presidente" took home most of the major awards including Movie Director of The Year for Mark Meily and Movie Actor of The Year for its lead star Jeorge "E.R" Estregan.
Estregan beat Dingdong Dantes who won the MMFF best actor trophy for "One More Try" as well as favorite Eddie Garcia for "Bwakaw," while Meily beat MMFF best director winner Brillante Mendoza for "Thy Womb."
In the independent movie category, the Jericho Rosales drama "Alagwa" was the big winner, bagging Indie Film of the Year and Indie Director of the Year for Ian Loreños. Kapamilya child star Bugoy Cariño was named Child Performer of the Year.
The much-lauded indie movie "Thy Womb" went home with only two awards for production design and cinematography.
Hosted by Kim Chiu, Iza Calzado and Piolo Pascual, the 29th PMPC Star Awards for Movies will be aired on March 17 at Sunday's Best on ABS-CBN.
