COMMONWEALTH BOUND TEAM REVEALED

By Jongile Xuba | 2022-05-19

SPORTS – The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) has announced the 20 member team that will represent the country at this year’s Commonwealth Games.

The team comprises 12 athletes and eight officials who will travel to Birmingham for the global spectacle in July.
Four sporting codes have been included in the assignment, namely athletics, boxing, cycling and swimming.

Athletics has six slots in the delegation, with the likes of Sibusiso ‘Swazi bolt’ Matsenjwa, Ayanda Malaza, high jumper Erikah Seyama and Bongiwe Mahlalela.
The other disciplines will only be sending two athletes each together with their respective coaches.

The team will be led by EOCGA Vice President Zakhele Dlamini as Chef de Mission (CDM) and EOCGA board member Nhlanhla Maphanga, who is the team’s general manager.
Dlamini said he was happy with the team that had been assembled during a press briefing held at Sigwaca House yesterday.

“The athletes who have been selected were chosen over a certain period of time by their respective associations, not by EOCGA. As CDM, I am happy with the squad that we have assembled and I am confident they will represent the country well at the games,” he said.
The CDM will travel in advance to sort out entire logistics for the team, where he will be working with the organising committee and the Eswatini High Commission.

Also travelling to the games will be EOCGA President Adam ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa together with the organisation’s CEO Maxwell Jele.

Other delegates who might also attend the games include the Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga, Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council Chairman Celucolo ‘Dino’ Dlamini and the Sports and Recreation Council CEO Darius Dlomo.

Worth noting, the above mentioned delegates will not be travelling with the team, but through courtesy of the Commonwealth Games family category.
