COACH LET GO AT NEW TRIER

Ron Klein, head baseball coach at New Trier for 33 years, will step down at the end of the season, Athletic Director Robert Naughton announced Thursday.

Klein, 58, who planned to retire from teaching at the end of the school year, said he did not volunteer to retire as head coach.

"They retired me," Klein said. "I wanted to stay on as coach but they made that decision for me."

Klein coached the Trevians to a 4-3 victory Thursday at home over Lake Forest.

Klein had 519 victories coming into the season and had led the Trevians to an average of 24 wins a season since 1983.

Naughton said Chris Beacom, Klein's assistant for the past three seasons, will take over as head coach next season.
