In 2006, Jean Paul Gaultier celebrated his 30th anniversary. Theatrical and avant-garde by nature, Gaultier never received formal training as a designer. Rather, he got his break working as an assistant to Pierre Cardin and released his first collection in 1976. Inspired by popular culture and the world around him, he designed costumes for Madonna's Blond Ambition tour (remember the famous cone-bra corset?) and outfitted the singer for her Confessions tour. Always one for the dramatic, Gaultier features vivid prints and lingerie-inspired looks as a recurring theme in his collections (as is costumelike clothing). But it's not all outlandish chez Jean Paul Gaultier: the designer, who received the CFDA International Award in 2000, also creates fabulous, wearable suits, statement-making dresses, and gorgeous knitwear.
