In a new interview with People, Joshua Bassett says he suffered heart failure shortly after the release of his song “Lie Lie Lie” in 2021.

Bassett told People that, after experiencing public hate following the release of Olivia Rodrigo's “Driver's License” (a song rumored to be about the pair's breakup, though neither of them has confirmed they were ever in a relationship), he underwent a lot of stress and eventually started feeling ill.

"I was sleeping 16 to 20 hours a day," he said. "I couldn't even stand up for longer than 30 seconds."

His song was released six days after Rodrigo's, and shortly after that, he asked to be taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with septic shock. People reports Bassett was experiencing heart failure.

"I felt my heart literally failing," he said. "I was like, 'This isn't just anxiety. This is bad.'"

At the time of his illness, Bassett told fans he underwent surgery, but didn't say what for. "Welp... not the first place I assumed I’d be on my 'Lie Lie Lie' release day... the ER!!" he wrote on Instagram. "After multiple, very very ugly days and nights, I had no choice today but be taken to the hospital."

Bassett told People that doctors said his condition may have been related to stress, and that if he hadn't gone to the hospital he may have died. After nine days in the hospital, Bassett had physically recovered, but was still dealing with panic attacks and depression. Now, more than a year latter, Bassett seems to be in a better place. He's taking time for himself, and focusing on helping others find peace.

"I'm constantly seeking how can I have a greater impact on myself and others, whether through music, charity or projects," he told People. "My mission is to bring light to people and help them find their peace. That's all I ever want to do, truly."
