Meredith College to Add Track and Field as Eighth Varsity Sport

Meredith College will add track and field as its eighth sport, with competition to begin in spring 2016.

Head Cross Country Coach Amy Olsen will direct the new program and looks forward to the joint athletic responsibility. “I am so excited for this program to move forward in the next natural step,” said Olsen. “We've built a strong cross country program and have a beautiful track and field facility. It is the right time to add more to the winning tradition of our existing athletic programs.”

Olsen enters her 10th season this fall as Meredith's cross country coach and earned 2013 USA South Coach of the Year honors.

Meredith College Athletic Director Jackie Myers announced the program’s eighth varsity sport during the Sir Walter Miler, held Friday, August 1, on the college's premiere track. In spite of soggy weather conditions, the exciting Sir Walter Miler event helped set the tone for Meredith's new program as three elite U.S. runners broke the sub-four-minute mile barrier. The top female runner was just four seconds shy of completing the women's sub-4.5 challenge.

Interested student athletes should Meredith should complete a track and field recruiting questionnaire.

In addition to cross country the Avenging Angels field teams in basketball, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. Lacrosse, the college's most recent addition, claimed the conference championship last spring in just the program’s second season of play.
