PlayStation Still Experimenting With Portable Gaming

Re-Vita-lised?

New PlayStation boss John Kodera has said that he wants the company to continue thinking about portable gaming.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Kodera said it was “not yet the right stage to discuss specific hardware plans", but that the company was carrying out experiments in the area.

“In my opinion, rather than separating portable gaming from consoles, it’s necessary to continue thinking of it as one method to deliver more gaming experiences and exploring what our customers want from portable. We want to think about many options.”

Sony now runs a smartphone game developer, ForwardWorks, but has scaled back much of its portable output elsewhere.

Only last week, the company announced that it will soon end production of physical cartridges for PlayStation Vita, and the PS Plus subscription service will stop offering Vita games as part of its monthly offerings next year.
Last year, Sony filed a patent for what looked like a Nintendo Switch-like handheld console, but ex-PlayStation boss Andrew House called the market "limited" and dismissed the idea of a Sony-made Switch competitor.

It's not clear if Kodera is thinking of reversing that approach, or if his focus is more on smartphones and the likes of PlayLink games, which connect portable devices to the PS4.

That approach may well be connected to where PlayStation as a whole heads next - Kodera recently confirmed that the PS4 is entering the final phase of its lifecycle, with the future of the brand likely to be visible by March 2021.
