Tsitsipas and Ruud round out Team Europe

World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas and world No.7 Casper Ruud will return to help Team Europe defend the Laver Cup at The O2 in London from September 23-25, 2022.

Tsitsipas will make his third Laver Cup appearance and Ruud his second on the six-man team, rounding out Team Europe’s lineup alongside Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer.

“This is an extraordinary lineup,” said Captain Bjorn Borg. “Stefanos and Casper are leading next-generation players. They have both excelled in Laver Cup competition and I have no doubt they will value the opportunity to stand alongside the Big Four. It will be an extraordinary event in London.”

Former world No.3 Tsitsipas is the highest-ranked Greek male tennis player in history and the first from his country to reach the final of a major in singles, which he did at the 2021 French Open. Aged 22, he was the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Murray reached the final of Australian Open 2010 at the same age.

So far this year Tsitsipas has won titles at Mallorca and the ATP Masters 1000 at Monte Carlo, bringing his overall singles career tally to nine. He was a finalist at Rotterdam and the ATP Masters 1000 Rome.

“Laver Cup is an event that I enjoy taking part of since I get to team up with my fellow rivals and become part of Team Europe, playing against some of the best competitors that Team World has to offer,” 23-year-old Tsitsipas said. “I’m more than proud to represent Team Europe!”

Ruud achieved a career high singles ranking of world No.5 in June following his run to the Roland Garros final, becoming the first Norwegian to break into the Top 10. He holds nine ATP singles titles, with 2022 victories at Buenos Aires, Geneva, and most recently Gstaad. A finalist at the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami this year, Ruud reached ATP Masters 1000 semifinals on clay in Rome 2020 and 2022, Monte Carlo 2021, and Madrid 2021.

“I am proud to be part of Team Europe’s historic lineup,” Ruud said. “It was an amazing experience competing in Boston, and I can’t wait to have these incredible players as my teammates in London.”

Team Europe is undefeated in Laver Cup competition, having won in Prague 2017, Chicago 2018, Geneva 2019, and Boston 2021.

Named in honor of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, winner of the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1962 and 1969, the competition pits six of the top players from Europe against six of their counterparts from the rest of the world.

While Team Europe has completed its lineup, two places are still to be named on Team World Captain John McEnroe’s side following previously announced Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Diego Schwartzman and Jack Sock.
