We Make You Healthier With Answers to Common Indoor Air Quality Problems

Your home should provide a place of comfort, safety and rest from the day's activities. But, an unseen nuisance may be getting in the way of your ideal home retreat — indoor air pollution.

Indoor air pollution has become a leading source of environmental pollution. In fact, the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ranked indoor air pollution among the top 5 environmental dangers.

Pollutants like chemical odors, cigarette smoke, mold, pet dander and cooking odors can all affect the quality of the air inside and also create harmful health effects on residents. If family members are experiencing symptoms like frequent colds, allergies or other respiratory troubles in the home, it's time to address and improve the indoor air quality at home.

The Most Common Causes of Poor Indoor Air Quality

Common indoor air quality problems result from a number of household items and fixtures. Here are just a few examples of air pollutants inside your home:

  • Cabinets: Cabinets and other furniture made from wood can contain formaldehyde gas. For this reason, ensure that you always inquire on the type of wood and finishing products before purchasing your cabinets or other furniture.  You can also consider purchasing wood products that are coated with polyurethane, which reduces formaldehyde off gassing.
  • Carpets: Carpets can be a good host for some pollutants, especially if they are damaged by water. To clean them, use a low emitting cleaner, and remember to vacuum on a regular basis.
  • Floor tiles: Tiles, especially older ones, may contain asbestos, which is released if the tiles are damaged. If they are damaged, contact a professional to remove the asbestos contamination for you.
  • Showers: Excess moisture in your home creates a natural breeding ground for biological pollutants such as mold, dust mites, and mildew. You can solve this problem by having an exhaust fan installed near any moisture source.
  • Fireplaces: Fireplaces, when in use, are a large source of carbon monoxide and other outdoor pollutants. To be on the safe side, ensure that you have an inspection at least twice an year. Be particularly mindful of creosote, as it can cause a house fire.
  • Tobacco smoke: Tobacco contains many pollutants that are harmful. For this reason, do not smoke in the house.
