Policy address lacks efficient short-term measures: Democratic Party

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu's maiden policy address lacks short-term measures that can solve citizens' urgent needs, the Democratic Party said, and complained about the complicated terms within.

The party believed Lee's policy address responded to their suggestions including building government-run transitional housing. Yet, the party doubted merging the latest Light Public Housing units into the waiting time of traditional public rental housing units cannot actually shorten the waiting time.

The party also agreed with the policy address that there is no turning back in the fight against Covid-19, but called on the government to provide a clear roadmap on returning to normalcy, and to scrap anti-pandemic curbs that are no longer efficient.

The party pointed out that the policy address didn't give any short-term measures that can immediately cope with citizens' issues, with little focus on social welfare, labor and education.

Lo Kin-hei, chairman of the party, noted that Lee mentioned setting up a lot of different committees and working groups, and wanted the government to explain clearly on the use of these bodies on administration work.

Lo continued although Lee penned an array of measures to lure overseas talents, he talked very less about slowing down the pace of the city's brain drain.

He added there are many complicated terms in Lee's policy address and Lee, as the city's leader, should let the public understand his vision and ideas on government's administration work more easily.
