Adam Vinatieri passes Morten Andersen to become NFL's all-time leading scorer

Adam Vinatieri has booted his way to another NFL record — and one that might stand for some time.

The Indianapolis Colts kicker set the NFL record for points scored on Sunday with a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter against the Oakland Raiders.

Vinatieri entered the day needing five points to pass Hall of Famer Morten Andersen's mark of 2,544. He converted an extra point and a 26-yard field goal in the first quarter.

In September, Vinatieri passed Andersen for the all-time mark for field goals with his 566th make in a Week 4 game against the Houston Texans.

Andersen congratulated Vinatieri in a prerecorded video that aired on CBS' broadcast of the game after the historic kick.

The 45-year-old's scoring record could go unchallenged for a while, as the closest active players to his total — Sebastian Janikowski of the Seattle Seahawks (1,840 points entering the day) and Phil Dawson of the Arizona Cardinals (1,837) — are both in their 40s and trail by more than 700 points. New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gotskowski, 34, likely has the best long-term shot of any active player but entered the day 1,677 points.

A four-time Super Bowl champion, Vinatieri played for the Patriots for the first 10 years of his career before joining the Colts. Upon signing a one-year deal with Indianapolis in February, he said he keeping open the possibility of playing beyond this season.

"If I can stay healthy and be productive, I can anticipate catching up to Morten (Andersen) midseason and at the end of the year I'll be 46," Vinatieri said. "I'm not putting anything out of reach. I'm not looking and saying, 'No way.' I just want to help our team be as productive as possible this year and if everything works out well, we'll be having this conversation again next year."
