Biography
Milanovich enters his second season with the Colts as the team's quarterbacks coach. He has 18 years of coaching experience, including four seasons in the NFL. Milanovich was named head coach of the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Football Team on December 12, 2019 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He previously served as the quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars for three seasons (2017-19).
In 2021, the Colts offense ranked second in rushing yards per game (149.4 avg.) and tied for ninth in points per game (26.5 avg.). Quarterback Carson Wentz completed 322-of-516 passes for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His interception percentage (1.4) was the third-lowest in the league and he ranked 10th in touchdown passes. Wentz tallied eight games with a 100.0+ passer rating, which tied for the eighth-most in the NFL. From Weeks 2-8, he completed a franchise-record 212 passes without an interception.
For the first time since 2016, Indianapolis had a 1,000-yard rusher (Jonathan Taylor - 1,811 yards) and 1,000-yard receiver (Michael Pittman Jr. - 1,092 yards) in the same season. It was the third consecutive season the Colts had a 1,000-yard rusher, marking the first time that has happened since 2003-07.
In 2019, Milanovich coached quarterback Gardner Minshew II, who broke franchise rookie records for single-season passing yards (3,271) and single-season passing touchdowns (21). He also set the franchise mark for the most passing yards (374) by a rookie in a single game in Week 5 at Carolina. Minshew II garnered Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors seven times and earned a spot on the Pro Football Focus All-Rookie Team. He also earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month accolades in September after he completed 84-of-121 passes for 905 yards and seven touchdowns with one interception for a 106.9 quarterback rating. Minshew II led all rookies in quarterback rating (91.2) and games with a 100.0-plus quarterback rating (six).
In his second season with Jacksonville, Milanovich helped quarterback Blake Bortles reach a single-season career-best in completion percentage (60.3) while recording four games with 300-plus passing yards. He also guided quarterback Cody Kessler, who started four games and completed 64-of-101 passes for 553 yards and one touchdown with one interception. Milanovich served as the team's play-caller and interim offensive coordinator for the last five weeks of the season.
In 2017, Milanovich coached Bortles as he completed 315-of-523 passes for 3,687 yards and 21 touchdowns with 13 interceptions as the Jaguars reached the AFC Championship Game. In the red zone, Bortles finished the season completing 30-of-53 passes for 220 yards and 18 touchdowns with zero interceptions. In three postseason starts, he completed 49-of-85 passes for 594 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Milanovich served as the head coach of the Toronto Argonauts for five seasons (2012-16). He registered a 43-47 overall record (.478) and earned Coach of the Year honors and a Grey Cup championship in 2012, his first season with the team.
Prior to Toronto, Milanovich served in multiple roles with the Montreal Alouettes from 2007-2011 and helped the team win the Grey Cup in 2009 and 2010. He spent his last three seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach after being promoted from offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Milanovich got his start with Montreal as the team's quarterbacks coach in 2007.
From 2004-06, Milanovich coached in NFL Europe with both the Cologne Centurions as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2006) and the Rhein Fire as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2005) and quarterbacks coach (2004).
As a player, Milanovich was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1996 and spent four seasons with the team. He then had a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns before signing with the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe. Milanovich returned to the U.S. and played for the Arena Football League's Los Angeles Extreme (2001) and Tampa Bay Storm (2002). He concluded his playing career with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders in 2003.
Milanovich played quarterback at the University of Maryland from 1992-95 and set school career records in pass attempts (982), completions (650), passing yards (7,301) and passing touchdowns (49).
