Why Is Ohio A Meme? TikTok Joke Explained

Jasmyne Jeffery December 7, 2022

TikTok fans and residents of the state are a little confused after ‘Only in Ohio’ started trending on the app. If you’ve seen it and are a bit confused, we answer why is Ohio a meme on TikTok.

It seems that suddenly Ohio is receiving a lot of schtick from the rest of the world. Although it’s rather silly, the trend takes fake or baffling videos and captions are ‘Only in Ohio’ as if that explains what’s happening in the video. The uploads tend to have absolutely nothing to do with the state, which seems to make it all the funnier.

So no, don’t worry — it’s not just all kicking off in Ohio for some reason.

The Only in Ohio Meme

The hashtag #onlyinohio has over 1 billion views on TikTok with everyone getting involved to make fun of the state. Videos are literally of anything, but here are a few of our favourites.

Quite a few of the videos are to the same song as well, Down in Ohio. This one supposes that buildings and people in the state aren’t even real, and can be pushed with your finger. So, if you go to Ohio, prepare for physics to work differently to what you’re used to.

However, some are just plain ridiculous. We can confirm that cameras attached to your doorbells are allowed in the state. We also think it’s safe to say that you’ll probably never see a tank through the feed either.

There’s not really a theme, it’s all happening in Ohio apparently. Sometimes your milk is frozen and that probably has happened in every state.

Originally, we thought these were ducks but upon closer look, it may just be a rare bread that only exists in Ohio. Nevertheless, animals getting in the way of your commute definitely isn’t isolated to Ohio…but maybe these birds are.

Why is Ohio A Meme?

It seems that the state being a meme isn’t a new thing. The meme actually started in 2016 on Tumblr of all places and all stemmed from one post. The post was off a screen at a bus stop that read ‘Ohio will be eliminated,’ and it got the ball rolling.

To be honest, something like that can only happen in Ohio but it seems the meme has left all reason behind at this point.

The original post has over 100,000 likes and reposts and started a conversation about why it will be eliminated. Perhaps, it’s because so many strange things happen there…

And so, that train of thought got the meme going and now there’s no going back. In fact, it seems like we’ve come so far now that people don’t even know where the meme started.

Now, TikTok is a thing, and the old meme has resurfaced for a platform that seems made for it. Twitter has also taken part too with a whole new set of videos apparently being from Ohio.

Whether you understand it or not, it seems like Ohio might be a meme for a little while yet.
