Webster-Chan talks commitment

Steve Walentik

I caught up with Missouri's latest commitment, Negus Webster-Chan, on the phone between his classes Friday morning at Huntington Prep in West Virginia. He talked about his decision to play for the Tigers. Here's a transcript of that brief conversation:

Steve Walentik: Congratulations on making your decision. How good does it feel to get this process over with?

Negus Webster-Chan: It feels real good.

SW: We talked last month after your visit here, and you sounded up in the air. Did you have a pretty good idea then that you were leaning toward Missouri?

NWC: Not a month ago. I just decided this week, Monday.

SW: What were the deciding factors ultimately?

NWC: The playing time opportunity is better at Missouri than the rest of the schools I chose. I had a great relationship with the coach, Coach Haith. I had a strong bond with coach (Tim) Fuller already, and I know Kadeem Green goes there. He's from Canada, too, where I'm from, and I got along with the players on and off the court when I was there.

SW: You were looking really hard at Iowa State, too, I know. Where else were you considering?

NWC: Texas, Clemson, Marquette.

SW: Was it really down to Iowa State and Missouri?

NWC: Yeah. It was basically down to them.

SW: Your teammate Stefan (Jankovic, a 6-foot-10 power forward prospect) visited with you last month. Would you like to see him join you at Missouri.

NWC: Yeah, for sure. That's like my little brother, but he's bigger and taller than me. I'd love for him to come.

SW: How excited are you to get to Missouri?

NWC: I'm really excited. I just want to win this national championship next year, and after that and school's done focus on Missouri basketball.

SW: What do you need to work on to play in college?

NWC: Just everything. You can't be satisfied with anything, but most likely, just getting stronger.
