In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt also called for the peace-loving international parties and the United Nations to shoulder their responsibilities and put an end to recurrent assaults on the Palestinians.

“Egypt has called for an immediate halt of such assaults on Palestinian cities, which threaten to cause the security situation in the West Bank to spiral out of control,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed today.

Egypt warned against the dangerous repercussions of such assaults on the security and stability in the occupied Palestinian areas and on the region.

“Egypt has also reiterated that the continuation of such assaults on Palestinian lives and property increases the state of tension and feelings of injustice among the Palestinian people,” the statement said.

The ministry also warned that these assaults undermine all efforts to revive the peace process, implement the vision of the two-state solution, and establish the Palestinian state on the borders of June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Egypt also urged the UN and international parties to act to put an end to the recurrent attacks on the Palestinian people and ensure protections for civilians.

Egypt highlighted the necessity to respect the rules of international law and international legitimacy resolutions related to the legitimate Palestinian rights and the Israeli state’s responsibilities as the occupying state.

The Israeli raid on Jenin camp killed nine Palestinians and injured 20 others, including four who are in a critical condition, Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians marched in the funeral procession of the deceased, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has announced a three-day mourning period across the nation.

The attack, which comes amid Israeli escalation in the West Bank, is the deadliest in the occupied territory in more than a year and brings the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces this year to 29.

The New Year has seen growing Israeli violence against Palestinians, especially in the West Bank, under the new far-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu.

Egypt has repeatedly called for an end to Israel’s assaults against Palestinians as well as provocative actions and unilateral measures, including settlement expansion, warning that they undermine the two-state solution.

Egypt underlined the need for Israel to avoid measures that would change the legal status quo in Jerusalem during a quarterly open debate held by the UNSC on the Palestinian issue on 20 January.

On 19 January, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry stressed the need to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and preserve the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem in a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.

Cairo also hosted a trilateral summit in mid-January between Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, calling for an end to all Israeli illegitimate and unilateral actions.

Meanwhile, in a phone call with Netanyahu early in January to congratulate him on his inauguration as prime minister, El-Sisi stressed the necessity of refraining from any unilateral measures that would lead to tensions and complicate the regional scene.

The Egyptian president also affirmed to Netanyahu the importance of achieving a fair and comprehensive peace between the Palestinian and Israeli sides in a way that contributes to achieving security and prosperity for all peoples of the region.
