Early Spring East of Town
Yang Juyuan 755-820

The best time for a poet is when spring is new
When willows turn gold but not completely
If you wait until the Royal Woods look like brocade
The whole town will be out gawking at flowers

Chéng Dōng Zǎo Chūn
Yáng Jùyuán 755-820

Shī jiā qīng jǐn zài xīn chūn,
Lǜ liǔ cái huáng bàn wèi yún.
Ruò dài Shànglín huā sì jǐn,
Chū mén jù shì kàn huā rén.

Translator: Red Pine-Bill Porter 赤松

Notes:
From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.

Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
