Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS)
The Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS) was built to help the Bureau deliver high quality water information to all Australians.
AWRIS is a powerful information system capable of receiving, standardising, organising and interpreting water data from across the nation.
How does AWRIS work?
AWRIS allows us to process and publish water data in new and powerful ways.
The Bureau receives information about river flows and groundwater levels, water volumes in storage, water quality in rivers and aquifers, water use and restrictions, water entitlements and water trades.
AWRIS components include a raw file store, ingest and transformation processes, an operational console for operators, a data warehouse, time series data management system and data marts that support products and services.
AWRIS will enhance the value of water information for users and contribute to better decision-making.
How is AWRIS being enhanced?
AWRIS continues to be enhanced to assist the Bureau to publish more water information and improve accessibility and to release more comprehensive water information types and functions.

Current projects
- System enhancements

Improvements will be made to the existing system to accommodate an increase in the amount of data that is stored and loaded through the system while ensuring reliability and improving security.
- Increasing Data Availability and accessibility

The Bureau has developed a range of water information products and services. The information products give greater visibility of the status of surface water, ground water and alternative water sources around the country. The Bureau will continue to increase the data made available through its products and services with the addition of data from more Agencies, more sites and new water data categories including water quality.
- Improving Products

Water Information products will continue to be enhanced and changes made as requested by customers to make for a better customer experience. There will be improvements to the Water Information Dashboard, enhancements to the Groundwater Information Suite to provide 3-D representation of groundwater data and enhancements to the monthly water updates and regional water information.
- Assisting Providers

The Bureau's Water Information products rely on data supplied by external providers under the Water Regulations. The data provided are ingested into the Australian Water Resource Information System (AWRIS) where they are available for incorporation into Water Information products.
The Bureau encourages and supports providers to deliver data in the Water Data Transfer Format (WDTF). Work is being carried out to develop a web based data provision system to assist smaller organisations to send data in this format. This will improve the Bureau's ability to obtain and ingest external organisation data and make it easier for organisations to supply data.
- Geofabric

The Geofabric is a digital database of surface and groundwater features that registers the spatial relationships between important hydrological features. Version 3 is being iteratively released and uses a finer scale for mapping features and the 1-second digital elevation model (DEM), providing catchment areas that better reflect the reality of regional catchment boundaries, including integrated monitoring stations and contributing catchment areas. It also provides improved resolution and increased numbers of features, including rivers, lakes, water tanks, dams and monitoring stations.
