Will there be a new episode of The Last of Us tonight on HBO or HBO Max? Is there going to be a follow up season?
The ninth episode of The Last of Us was everything that fans of the video game could have wanted. It stayed true to the game in a lot of ways. Among them was Joel killing a lot of Fireflies on his way to save Ellie. If the show was your introduction to this story, seeing Joel Miller killing people may have been jarring. However, it’s understandable.
Joel’s entire life became about Ellie. They grew closer and after almost a year of avoiding danger at every turn. Of course he’d save her in the end. It’s also not shocking that he killed Marlene. She wouldn’t have stopped coming after them and Ellie would have been killed to find a cure. Eventually, one of them would have had to die. It just happened to be Marlene.
Fans of the show are left with a cliffhanger. Joel lied to Ellie about what happened while she was prepped for surgery and she seems to know something’s up. Now viewers have to wonder a couple of things. Will Ellie find out the truth and what happens to her relationship with Joel when she does? Unfortunately you’ll have to wait a while to see those results on HBO.
Is The Last of Us new tonight, March 19?
Unfortunately, there won’t be a new episode of The Last of Us tonight. If you’ve been keeping up with the show’s release schedule, you’ll probably know that last week’s episode was the season 1 finale. But the HBO schedule confirms that there won’t be a bonus tenth episode of The Last of Us airing on HBO or streaming on HBO Max tonight.
This isn’t surprising. HBO has kept a tight schedule for decades. When the network promotes a season finale, that’s what you’re going to get. There could be some bonus content like interviews, but not a new episode.
When does The Last of Us return to HBO?
The good news is that there will be a second season of The Last of Us. The show was renewed days after its premiere, so Joel and Ellie’s adventures will continue. That said, as filming has yet to begin, it will be at least a year (or two) before the show returns for season 2. The earliest window would probably be fall 2024, but a 2025 release is much more likely.
In the meantime, there are other things to do while you wait for The Last of Us to return. If you’re like this writer, you’ve already revisited the game. After watching the show, it’s cool to replay The Last of Us part 1. You get to see all of the things that were changed and all of the Easter eggs throughout the program. There’s also a difference between seeing the game and experiencing it.
If you’re not a gamer, then YouTube is an option. There are dozens of channels dedicated to the video game. That’s where you can witness all of the action that was taken out. While watching the gameplay, you’ll see the original source material and how it differed from the show. For example, Pedro Pascal was a kinder version of Joel Miller. The video game version was a curmudgeon. He eventually warmed up to Ellie, but it seemed to take a lot longer.
Whichever direction you decide to go, just know that it’ll be a long time before you see new episodes of The Last of Us. Thankfully, though, season 2 is on the way.
