There may have been a whiff of pocket protector about the Kenosha, Wisconsin,-built Renault Alliance in the mid-1980s, but that car was initially quite a strong seller and received numerous awards, including Motor Trend's 1983 Car of the Year prize. It was cleanly styled, lauded for its interior room and ride comfort, and available in two- and four-door sedan forms; a convertible joined the lineup in 1985.
Renault saw the then-popular market for small, inexpensive, sporty cars, and chose to offer its own in the form of 1987's GTA. This model was based on the two-door sedan and convertible, and it featured attractive body-color bumpers and ground effects, a trunklid lip spoiler, lightweight 15 x 6-inch Ronal alloy wheels fitted with 50-series Michelin Sport XGT radials, plus special bucket seats and a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. Its 2.0-liter, 95-hp OHC four-cylinder engine was a step up from the lesser model's 1.7-liters and 77 hp, and depending on the source, the five-speed-only car could do the 0-60 MPH run on either side of the 10-second mark.
The GTA retained the practicality of the Alliance, and added a dash of sport and genuine handling ability. It was quite competitive, as this Motorweek video shows.
You can watch more videos of this American Renault in action on the Renault Alliance Club Passion YouTube page.
GTA options included air conditioning, a stereo cassette with graphic equalizer, and even remote keyless entry... in 1987! Unfortunately, its cost -- $9,000 for a GTA sedan and $14,537 for a convertible, the rough equivalent of $18,880 and $30,496 today -- and the fact that AMC/Renault didn't have a youthful performance reputation to draw people into dealerships -- kept buyers away. A mere 5,515 GTA two-door sedans and 1,029 GTA convertibles were sold, and the model did not return for 1988.

In the wake of stuntwoman and land-speed record holder Kitty O'Neil's death last week at the age of 72, Kurt collected up the trio of videos below that tell much of her life story and that highlight some of her most daring stunts and thrill rides, which we felt was perhaps the best way to memorialize her.
Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) and Deluxe Corporation, a Minnesota-based financial leader, have joined together to launch the new Porsche Deluxe Female Driver Development Program. The initiative of the program is to give female race car drivers who participate in the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid North America more opportunities to hone their skills and build their driving careers.
Sabré Cook is the first recipient of the scholarship. She caught the attention of officials after winning an all-female driver shootout hosted by Kellymoss at the end of 2022. Cook is no stranger to racing or to the Porsche brand. Having started in small-displacement single-seat, open-wheel formula cars in 2017, Cook moved up the ranks into the F3-based W Series where she earned several top-10 finishes. She became the first female driver in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America to earn a podium finish in 2021. For 2023, she will move into Porsche one-make racing, piloting the No. 37 Deluxe Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car.
Aside from the scholarship, the Deluxe Corporation will also back the Kellymoss-prepared Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car that Cook will drive in the Pro class of the 2023 series. Both Cook and the Kellymoss organization will be official representatives of Deluxe throughout the season. Alongside the support from Deluxe, PMNA will assist Cook with event entry fees and one-on-one mentoring with Porsche Motorsport legend Patrick Long.
In an IMSA press release, Volker Holzmeyer, president and CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America, stated, “One of our primary objectives at PMNA is to nurture young talent. We recognize the importance of drawing more female talent into the paddock at all levels. The most visible opportunity to showcase our objectives is from the driver’s seat of our Porsche one-make series. As we developed our relationship, we found ourselves of the same mind with Deluxe. When we combine with their commitment and that of Kellymoss, we can now provide Sabré all the tools she needs to challenge for the Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America championship in 2023.”
Victoria Thomas, the co-owner/CFO of Kellymoss, added, “We are excited to have Deluxe and Porsche as partners to recognize the value of supporting women in motorsports. The goal is to bring more women forward as drivers, as technicians, as engineers and definitely as fans. Together, this group is going to be very powerful in producing a lot of awareness and we believe that will bring the change.”
