ALLENDALE -- The Laker Turf Building at Grand Valley State University is expected to be renamed in honor of former Lakers football coach and current Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly as part of a dedication ceremony later this month.

The special presentation is set for June 25 at 10:30 a.m.

Kelly, who guided the Lakers to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 2002-03, compiled a 118-35-2 record in 13 seasons at GVSU from 1991-2003.

He was named American Football Coaches Association D-II coach of the year after leading the Lakers to a 14-0 record and its first national title in 2002 and after leading them to a 14-1 mark to claim the school's second consecutive national title in 2003.

His teams claimed five conference titles and made six D-II playoff appearances. The 2001 Lakers set 77 NCAA, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and school records, including the all-time D-II scoring record of 58.4 points per game.
