A hospital and intermodal freight terminal in Beveridge and the extension of metropolitan train lines to Wallan and Wollert are highlights of a new North and West Melbourne City Deal Plan launched on Monday.
The plan, which has the support of all 13 affected councils – including Mitchell Shire Council and the City of Whittlesea, includes 66 major projects to create more than 300,000 jobs.
The aim of the plan is to create employment and economic development opportunities in eight key precincts, Cloverton/Beveridge, Epping, La Trobe, Broadmeadows, Cobblebank, Footscray, Sunshine and Werribee.
The plan estimates that more than three million people will call north and west Melbourne home by 2040 with one in 12 Australians and one in three Victorians living in the region.
Major transformative projects already announced or commenced, such as the West Gate Tunnel and Melbourne Airport Rail Link, form part of the plan along with new projects in Beveridge Intermodal Freight Terminal, Epping Innovation and Food Export Hub and an Outer North Hospital.
Transport projects in the plan include the electrification of the north east line to Wallan, a rail line to Wollert and an upgrade to the Northern Highway at Wallan.
