• Global Monsoon Research Hub

IMPO provides consolidated support to global monsoon research coordination from weather to climate change time scales, under WMO's World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and WMO co-sponsored World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).

The IMPO closely coordinates its work with the relevant governing structures, including WWRP SSC and WGTMR, and WCRP JSC and SSGs of CLIVAR, GEWEX and SPARC.

  • CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel

The CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel coordinates monsoons research between GEWEX and CLIVAR, including the role of convection and land surface in the monsoons, as well as ocean-atmosphere interactions.

IMPO provides the primary support to the Monsoons Panel, on behalf of both CLIVAR and GEWEX, and also promotes its collaboration with other monsoon-relevant activities of both WWRP and WCRP.

  • Monsoons Panel Working Groups

The Monsoons Panel has a structure of 3 regional working groups focusing on Asian-Australian Monsoons, African Monsoons and American Monsoons.

These working groups lead regionally focused monsoon research in each of the three areas of globe. The Panel fosters a global view of the monsoons, coordinating the regional working groups, and facilitate linkages among international research efforts.

  • Cross-Panel Coordination

IMPO proactively supports the cross-panel coordination on monsoon research, and helps linking the Monsoons Panel with the monsoon-related activities of different regional ocean panels of CLIVAR, land-atmosphere panels of GEWEX and the atmospheric composition activities of SPARC. IMPO also supports the WWRP WGTMR monsoon activities, International Workshop series on Monsoons, etc.

INTERNATIONAL MONSOONS PROJECT OFFICE

Welcome!

The International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO), hosted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, is India's contribution to global monsoon research coordination. The IMPO functions as an International Project Office of the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO's) World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the WMO/IOC-UNESCO/ISC World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
