20 April 2023

We’re making the Frankston Line level crossing free by removing all 27 of the dangerous and congested level crossings by 2029 and building 17 new stations, improving safety, reducing congestion, and allowing more trains to run more often.

As part of works to remove the dangerous and congested Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road level crossings, both roads will temporarily close from May while we dig the new rail trench, build the road over it, and install new tram tracks and a central tram platform. By closing both roads at the same time, our crews will be able to work quicker and get the roads and rail line open sooner.

Changes to the way you travel

  • Glen Huntly Road will be closed between Booran Road and Grange Road from Friday 5 May to mid July.
  • Neerim Road will be closed between Booran Road and Grange Road from Monday 29 May to late June.
  • Buses will replace Route 67 trams between the Glen Huntly Tram Depot and Carnegie from 9pm 5 May to mid-July.
  • Buses will replace trains on the Frankston Line between South Yarra and Moorabbin over the weekend from Friday 5 May to Sunday 7 May.
  • Buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line from 9pm Friday 2 June to early August.

Prior to the road closures, works will be taking place 24 hours a day from Thursday 20 April at the Glen Huntly Road level crossing. During this time the road will remain open to traffic and Route 67 trams will operate as normal.

What to expect: Glen Huntly Road

  • Glen Huntly Road will be closed to vehicles between Booran Road and Grange Road – local access will be maintained between Booran Road and James Street.
  • We’ll install temporary fencing and concrete barriers along Glen Huntly Road between James Street and Grange Road to separate the works area and keep pedestrians safe. This means there will be no parking on this section of Glen Huntly Road. Parking is available on local surrounding streets.
  • No pedestrian access will be available across the Glen Huntly Road level crossing and detours will be in place and clearly signposted. Footpaths will remain open on either side of the level crossing to access shops and businesses.
  • Pedestrians will be able to cross the rail corridor at Neerim Road until Monday 29 May, Wattle Avenue, Woodville Avenue, and the Moodie Street underpass.
  • We’ll provide a local shuttle bus to help you get around the local area and access the shops.

What to expect: Neerim Road

  • Neerim Road will be closed to vehicles between Booran Road and Grange Road – local access maintained.
  • Neerim Road will be closed to pedestrians over the level crossing between Watson Grove and Heath Drive and to/from Queens Avenue – detours will be clearly signposted.
  • Pedestrians will be able to cross the rail corridor at Wattle Avenue, Woodville Avenue, and the Moodie Street underpass.
  • We’ll provide a local shuttle bus to help you get around the local area and access the shops.
  • Queens Avenue will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians between 12 Queens Avenue and the Neerim Road intersection.
  • Manchester Grove and Station Place will remain open to pedestrians.
  • Manchester Grove will remain open to vehicles.

Why we need to close these roads

Trains will continue to run on the Frankston Line until mid-year, when we start to dig out the trench to lower the rail line under Neerim and Glen Huntly roads. This means that during May we are working near live trains. While the roads are closed, we’ll be:
  • getting rid of one of Melbourne’s last tram squares on Glen Huntly Road, where train and tram lines cross – to do this, we need to demolish sections of the road, and remove tram lines, redundant tram assets, and overhead wires
  • installing new tram tracks and overheads and building a new central tram platform on Glen Huntly Road
  • creating safe access for the heavy equipment we’ll be using, including a 500 tonne crane, and piling rigs
  • making a safe space for concrete and haulage trucks to operate
  • building a new road bridge over the rail trench
  • installing new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.
