On this day
In 1871 the Trade Union Act legalised trade unions; in 1905 motoring enthusiasts met in London to form the Automobile Association; in 1960 the BBC opened, and broadcast from, the first purpose-built centre for TV production, Television Centre at White City near Shepherd’s Bush, west London; in 1995 the US space shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian Mir space station. The previous link-up of spacecraft from the two countries was in 1975, involving an Apollo capsule and a Soviet Soyuz craft; in 2009 a freight train carrying liquefied gas derailed in the resort of Viareggio in northern Italy, setting off an explosion and a fire that killed 32 people and injured 26; in 2014 the Islamic State group declared a new caliphate in Iraq and Syria, where it swept aside and threatened vast parts of the population.
Nature notes
As the London St Pancras train rushes to Folkestone, a priceless floral display is in full view through the windows. For mile after mile, the steep embankments on either side of the tracks are a white blaze of dog daisies. Wild flowers naturally grow in excess like this, forming abundant drifts. We may have banished meadows from modern Britain, but fortunately they cling on to the edgelands of railway lines and road verges, just waiting to spread their colour and life. Dog daisies are also known as oxeye daisies, on account of the yellow of their floral disc, which is as beautiful as the large, round eye of a gentle cow.
