EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS: EVERYBODY HATES BASKETBALL (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series that takes place in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in 1982, the year Chris Rock turned 13. In this episode, Chris struggles to make friends at his new and all-white school and ends up falling in with the "nerds," including Greg, with whom he bonds over their love of talking about sports. As Greg panics about a possible upcoming pop quiz, Coach Brady spots Chris tossing a paper into the trash and immediately recruits him onto the basketball team, despite Chris' protests that he is actually terrible at sports. Back at home, Julius and Rochelle attempt to find a reasonable person to rent their upstairs room, and Julius is pleased when he meets a seemingly normal man, Tate, who offers to pay six months' rent in advance. Chris is excited to find that he has suddenly become cool now that he is on the basketball team, though Greg feels rejected, and Rochelle is immediately wary of the new boarder, particularly when she hears bizarre noises from upstairs at night.

Drew advises Chris to avoid actually playing basketball by any means necessary, knowing that he will do badly, and Chris is relieved to hear that he failed the pop quiz and therefore cannot be in the next game – but then learns that his teacher is offering a make-up test. Trapped, Chris decides to fail again on purpose, preferring to face his mother's wrath than that of the entire school, but the teacher passes him for the sake of the team despite his incorrect answers. Rochelle is alarmed by Tate's increasingly odd behavior, and Chris' worse fears come true when he joins the basketball game and does very poorly, leading to a loss. Rochelle finally declares that she wants Tate out despite any clear evidence of wrongdoing, and after Julius sadly returns the man's money, Rochelle's suspicions are proven valid when a SWAT team bursts into to arrest Tate for various crimes. At school, Chris happily returns to life with the nerds, but then learns that he retroactively failed the make-up quiz now that he is no longer on the team. Commercials deleted.
