The Sony Corporation will manufacture significant portions of a new Macintosh laptop computer being developed by Apple Computer Inc., Sony executives said. The officials said the two companies had not reached a final agreement on the exact extent of Sony's involvement in the computer.

Reports of Sony's involvement in the Macintosh laptop first appeared several months ago. Earlier this week, Apple's chairman, John Sculley, refused to comment on the laptop computer until it was formally announced, but he noted that Apple was already one of Sony's biggest customers. Sony supplies Apple with floppy disk drives and computer screens. "The two companies get along very well together," he said.
