Get ready for a full dose of medical mysteries with 21 episodes of the riveting drama series, House. Hugh Laurie is joined by James Earl Jones (Star Wars), Laura Prepon (That '70s Show) and David Strathairn (The Bourne Ultimatum) in guest appearances as he returns to his Golden Globe® winning and Primetime Emmy® Award-nominated role as Dr. Gregory House. In this brilliant sixth season, House finds himself in an uncomfortable position— away from the examination room. As he works to regain his license and his life, his coworkers deal with the staff shakeups, moral dilemmas, and their own tricky relationships with House. And when House returns more obstinate than ever, Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital will never be the same again.
Amazon.com
The sixth season of House, M.D. starts off with a phenomenal two-part episode that sets the tone for the rest of the year. After years of abusing prescription drugs (and colleagues), Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) finds himself in a psychiatric ward as a patient who is not so patient with his own doctor. Smart and manipulative, House tries to finagle his way out of the hospital. But his selfish actions set off a chain reaction of events that manage to shake even his own confidence--temporarily, at least. This season spends a lot of time delving into House's psyche and the writers do a wonderful job depicting a brilliant, sad, and flawed man who knows more than most, but not enough to save every patient who comes to see him. That glimpse allows viewers to sympathize with his addictions but leaves them guessing as to whether the good doctor will be able to shake his dependency on drugs for good. However, viewers are never actually convinced when House quits his job. In many ways, he is his job.
House has always tackled fascinating cases and that continues this season, though the symptoms aren't overly dramatic by House standards. The team tries to save a man whose family history indicates that he will die of a heart attack before he turns 40. They try to help a brilliant scientist whose depression and addictions make him feel he's better suited for a simpler life as a courier. And Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) may once again be grappling with cancer. It's a credit to this show that while it features such a strong lead character, the costars don't get shafted in the process. Wilson is one of the show's most charming characters and, by default, has become House's best friend. The two of them share a home and bicker like an old married couple. When a woman they both are attracted to mistakenly assumes that they're a complicated gay couple, we can't help but laugh. But Wilson's love life is made difficult by the return of his ex-wife and House doesn't want to see his friend hurt again. He can abuse Wilson, but he doesn't want her to do the same.
House's boss Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) has her own issues, juggling a harried personal life and the complications that come with trying to keep House in line. Chase (Jesse Spencer) falls under scrutiny this season after treating a controversial politician who he fears will murder innocent civilians. He finds himself struggling with the Hippocratic oath to treat all patients--even the ones he finds distasteful--to the best of his ability. And of the main characters on the show, one will be fired, another will profess their love for a colleague, and three of them will look for love via a speed-dating service. Yes, the story lines are all over the place, but then again, so is House. --Jae-Ha Kim

Here are my insights: the first episode is brilliant! House in the asylum to get off the pain killers and deal with the hallucinations. Now, it is great but is in no way based on any fragment of reality. This is television, and one must understand the nature of artistic license. Yes they make you stick your tongue out after taking your medicine to make sure you swallowed it. Yes they escort people to phones and monitor patients around the clock. Yes they have alarms on most doors. No, House would not have been able to drive out (their would undoubtedly be a gate and guard). But the episode is not about the inner workings of an asylum, but about House progressing as a character.
Now once the show gets back on track is where it falls short. Season 5 had its ups and downs but overall had good drama and good medical mysteries. It seems they are bored with the interesting yet realistic cases from before and coming up with crazier and crazier story lines. Still entertaining.
What I don't like is how Wilson takes a backseat in this season. Like Murray in Flight of the Conchords, Wilson is the glue that holds the show together. Where seasons 1 and 2 excelled was in the play between House, Wilson, and Cuddy. Now there is a relationship starting, and it seems to be going the Grey's Anatomy direction.
Still the cases are interesting, and they don't have the horrid American Idol type competition for the 'America's next top Princeton Plainsborough Teaching Hospital Diagnostic Medicine Department Fellowships' like season 4 (God that was awful); and the surprise death (and terrible episode) at the end of season 4. I am also happy that we got rid of one annoying character in season 5 and another in season 6 (though this character does make some reappearances). So three main characters out in 6 seasons... not too bad (definitely not as screwy as ER got).
Olivia Wilde is brilliant as always, Omar Epps is good, but not as brilliant as he was in seasons 1-3. I do like that Chase gets into the action. He is a rather enjoyable character to watch. He has some issues in this season and really develops as a character.
The show is still great, but it needs to close out soon. I hope for the integrity of the show they end at season 7. It is losing steam and I don't want it to end up like ER!
In my opinion seasons 1-3 are the best and rate about equal to me, then 5, then 6, then a big step down to 4 (a whole slew of unimportant, uninteresting characters and cases).
Cases got more and more complicated and House, the unique genius finally solve the puzzle.
This was so good, that a real doctor from a university is using the House cases to teach students in diagnostic medicine.
He said, that even he as an experienced doctor need to look up some details in medicine library.
All is accurate. Only a little dramatic is added in finding the solution.
So much about the quality of medicine of the series.
This is not changing in the actual 6. season.
It is getting more believable, because not all patients could be saved.
But this fits in perfectly. It is not something like "OK, this must happen one time."
Compliments to the authors.
The medicine could not be raised to a new level. It was always on the highest level.
But the personalities and interaction could still be developed. And this room was used perfectly.
House started in the mental clinic, getting rid of his illusions and addiction.
Another play of House? No. He found a smart counterpart in the head of this clinic, actually convincing him to go through it, facing his problems.
Brilliant acting and interesting interaction.
Back on work the new personal interaction take shape.
House is living together with Wilson and you see a real friendship. But House is not selling his soul. He is only using his abilities in a creative, not destructive way. Really fun to watch.
The medicine cases getting deeper, focussing also on the human behind.
A highlight is an african dictator, played perfectly by James Earl Jones, putting Chase is a serious personal dilemma.
He know he should treat someone who is guilty of genocide.
Every character is gaining. You get to know them better, watch them growing personally. Not a minute boring.
The "competition" is won by House. But in a photo finish from my point of view.
Until at the final episode House make the biggest jump. Best episode I ever saw. No telling: Watch it!
Every episode has something: Drama, fun, interesting background, interesting medicine cases. I just start over and watching them all again!
Best season? Easily said, but only true if you know the other seasons too.
Clear recommendation.
Top reviews from other countries
After the epic finale of Season 5, where House finally hits rock bottom and commits himself, I really wasn't sure where Season 6 could go. The fifth year had a promising start, a reasonably enjoyable middle and a jaw dropping ending. However, the middle always makes me think of an otherwise uneventful Season 3. I rarely return to that Season.
Although I enjoyed Season 6 up to a point on the TV I actually ended up putting off buying this season for an entire year on Blu-Ray simply because, side from the finale, it didn't live up to Season 4 (still my favourite).
However, I recently purchased this Blu-Ray and have been additively (pun intended) chomping through each episode on a nightly basis.
My conclusion is that House is not really a TV series. It is impossible to get the full force of the stories and sub-plots when you have to wait an entire week for the next chapter. On DVD/Blu-Ray you can get your fill and sink into the world and relish the detailed sub-plots.
Season 6 has some amazing moments; notably the feature-length season opener 'Broken' in which House is a patient himself for several months. 'Epic Fail' is an impressive difficult-second-album (how would YOU follow 'Broken'?) and 'The Tyrant' shows that this season will pull no punches and gives Chase his most powerful story line to date.
The season finale 'Help Me' is brilliant and the build up to this episode in terms of character's back stories is brilliantly handled. Every character has their moment to shine and after Season 5, we are reminded just why these characters are in the first place.
My personal forgotten episodes that are worthy of mention (but ignored the first time round) are:
'Teamwork' in which Chase faces his worst-case scenario, 'Remorse' where the team come face-to-face with an actual psychopath, 'Wilson' and '5 to 9' both cover a day-in-the-life (almost) of Wilson and Cuddy respectively which have more appeal when viewed back-to-back with medical mystery episodes. 'Private Lives' which holds some of the season's more amusing moments including a speed dating sequence. Finally, Hugh Laurie's directorial début, 'Lockdown' is by far the season's finest hour (bar the opening and closing episodes).
All in all this season is the best we have seen for a while and it would be difficult to find fault with any episode.
The Blu-Rays:
Picture:
I have never seen House look so good. The detail is crisp, sharp and the contrast is spot on. For anyone looking for hours and HOURS of near perfect quality to show off your new full HD TV, then you cannot go wrong with this. 'Broken' (which is like a movie anyway) look spectacular, but scenes from 'Moving The Chains' and 'Black Hole' were very impressive on my TV.
Audio:
It was the audio that prompted me to write this review in the first place. If you have a Blu-Ray player but are not sure whether or not to spend the extra on the BD version of this season - think again! The 5.1 mix on the previous DVDs has always been OK, but the DTS 5.1 mix on this Blu-Ray is awesome! Music segments fill the room, background noise really is background noise. I cannot tell you how crisp and clear you can hear monitor beeps and corridor noise behind you! It is a great use of the 5.1 mix I have ever known for a TV series.
I realise that I am probably not saying anything new about this box set than previous review, or as coherently, but I wanted to add my feelings on viewing the Blu-Ray edition as it really does the show and this season justice.
I highly recommend it on both a technical level and for being such an incredibly great season.
I certainly am not going to wait a year to purchase Season 7!
After the opening double episode we are back at Princeton Plainsboro where House returns to his duties at the hospital. With difficulty he re-assembles his team. Foreman, Chase, Taub and Thirteen are around for most of the season. As is Cuddy. Cameron makes a guest appearance in "Lockdown". Wilson features largely and I for one welcome that. Love him. House is off drugs for the season, but the only thing that has changed is that we don't see him popping pills at every opportunity.
As to the DVDs: Season 6 has subtitles for those who may need them. Also no more annoying anti-piracy clips. There are a few nice bonus features. I bought the DVDs used and there is a problem with a couple of the discs. Since the faulty discs have visible signs of wear I have contacted the seller in the hope that the issue can be resolved, but will not mark down the product. Surely, the DVDs were not produced with scratches in them.
Everyone enjoys watching very much.
Thank-you.
Yet, there is a conscience behind the unemployable heart of House. To begin with, he sections himself to do cold turkey and finally come off Vicodin, thus proving that the bizarre and offensive behaviour is all House the person and not drug-related, and in the conclusion to the series in which the life of a patient in an accident is in the balance and House's true feelings for Cuddy come under scrutiny. Yet another splendid series, going from strength to strength and proving once again that there is simply no substitute for quality of scripts, plots and tip-top acting. Unputdownable!
